    Thisisabovetheobjective,andismadeupofapolarisingplate,whoseheightmaybe adjustedatwill,usingagraduateddial(1).

    Unlikethepolariser,theanalyserdoesnotalwayshaveaparttoplayinthepassageofthe lightraysandcanbeinstalledorremovedatwill.Itisusedtostudycertainpropertiesbut isnotnecesaryforothers.

    ThepolarisingplaneisgenerallyNS,anditisalwaysperpendiculartothepolariser, suchthatifthereisnoobjectintheway,nolightpassesandExtinctionoccurs. Belowitisaslotwherecompensatingplatescanbeinserted.

    Whenonlythepolariser(1)isbeingused,anormalimageisobserved,butwhenthe analyserisinplace(2),anextinctionoflightoccurs. Ifananisotropicsubstanceisinthelight'spath,thelightsplitsintotworayswhich
