Time 5 minutes Motivation and Introduction: Introduce subject matter and objectives of class: a) Rise of Nazi Party and Hitler in Germany; b) Why this was one of the most significant events of the 20 Century WWII, Holocaust, Cold War; and c) We are going to briefly learn about the rise of the Nazi Party and then learn how to use an interactive timeline program, Tiki-Toki, and you are going to be given a brief to construct some different timelines in groups of 2 that we will integrate next week so that we can increase our understanding of why the Nazi Party came to power and how different historical methods texts, primary sources and media can be used to examine this. In the lesson next week, when we integrate the timelines and consider different timelines for the same period and events, we will also critically review how the authors of history influence what history is. Lesson Steps 1. Overview of Subject Matter - take students through The Rise of the Nazi Party webpage. Students to log on to the webpage. 2. Go back to links on the webpage to give illustration of where primary sources, media and further text depth on the topic can be obtained. 3. Brief students on their timeline task: a) Construct a Tiki Toki timeline on the subjects that teacher will allocate. To be done in groups of 2. b) Timeline is to show: i) Key events for subject in period and brief paragraph description; ii) Links or references to at least two (2) secondary texts or web pages that analyse each event; iii) Embed one original source for each event; iv) Embed one media source for each event; and v) Briefly explain the causal and consequential links to each event.
th

Resources/References Align these with the segment where they will be introduced.

4. Advise students of groups and timeline subjects: i) Treaty of Versailles ii) The German Economy 1918-1934 iii) The Nazi Party 1919-1934 iv) Adolf Hitler v) Anti-semitism in Germany 5. Take students to Tiki-Toki website and explain features. As students will have a week to complete the timeline, it is not necessary to spend excessive time explaining Tiki-Tok as students should be able to work out how to use it. The emphasis is on historical review of the subject. 6. Instruct students to join with their partner and start discussing how they are going to construct their timeline. Advise them they will have a week to complete the timeline. 7. Circulate amongst groups of students to check understanding, answer questions and provide ideas on sources and historical views on the events. Lesson Closure: 1. Restate what the timeline is to contain and what the learning objectives in constructing it are. 2. Explain that next week, 2 integrated timelines will be constructed using Tiki-Toki integrating one timeline from each subject to create two timelines for the same period. Explain that the class will then critically review the timelines to consider: a) How the subjects relate to each other; b) Some of the sources used; and c) How the two integrated timelines differ and what this shows.

Teacher Note 2 groups will be allocated to each subject. Some groups may have to have three members depending on class size.

Assessment: Timelines will be informally assessed as to whether they meet the requirements specified.
