Joshua Lombardi 4/13/14 / Thursday Lesson # 4 of 4 Review Volleyball Spike/Introduce Block Mr. Gerry East Longmeadow High School A. Teaching Behaviors: For each teaching behavior, reflect on what went well AND what needs improvement AND why. You are NOT reiterating what you taught! 1. Planning/Preparation The planning for this lesson was very good. The boot camp, activities, and games worked very well with these students. I had planned for 20 students for the first lesson and seven students the second lesson; I had the exact amount of students I planned for with both lessons. It would have been ideal to have eight students for the second lesson but I did plan for seven. There was not any problems with planning. In terms of preparation, I did forget to bring cones for the spiking activity of this lesson; however, I just used the lines on the opposite side of the court to make the grids the same way I would have with cones. This did not cause a huge problem but the activity may have been more effective if I did have

the cones. For the next time I teach I will remember to bring all of the necessary equipment.

2.

Lesson Content The lesson content definitely met the developmental levels of the

students and the students definitely achieved success with the content. During both lessons students were able to name the majority of skill cues I was looking for when reviewing the spike and after the informing students were able to tell me the key points when blocking. The students understood the content of the lesson and were able to display their knowledge of the content both physically and cognitively. For the next time I teach I will try to keep the content as developmentally appropriate and make changes wherever needed during the lesson.

3.

Transition/Classroom Management During this lesson, I finally met my goal of having the students be

completely responsible for equipment distribution and clean up. I remembered in between every activity that the students need to be responsible for the equipment rather than me running around and getting

it for them. I also remembered during the transitions to assign an individual student from each group to be responsible for their groups equipment. For the next time I teach I will remember to put the responsibility on the students depending on the age of the students which I am teaching. The transitions today were a little slower than in my recent lesson. Im not exactly sure what the reason for this was; however, the next time I teach will give the students a motivational object like you have five seconds to get to your side of the court and start counting down from five to one. This will most likely speed up the transitions and get the students to move more quickly.

4.

Content Delivery The content delivery was very good today for both lessons. The

students were able to understand what I was teaching and turn what I was explaining into movement. I tried to keep the delivery as short as I possibly could to keep the students moving and in activities to give them the highest amount of OTRs as possible. When I was checking for understand the students were able to answer most of my questions correctly and they definitely hit the 80% mark I was looking for. For the

next lesson I teach I will try to be as clear and concise as I was with this lesson.

5.

Feedback given by you to the Students I do not feel like I gave as much feedback as I normally do with my

lessons. With that being said, the feedback I gave was very appropriate for the students and the feedback helped the students to become more successful. I gave mostly corrective specific and positive specific along with some positive general, but no where near as much as I normally give to the students. For example, some students were struggling with spiking and after I gave them feedback I saw an improvement in their speaking ability. I felt like I was constantly talking and communicating with the students; however, I just do not feel like I provided as much feedback as normal. For next lesson, I will try to provide more feedback and keep the quality of the feedback as high as I possibly can.

6.

Feedback you received from Cooperating Teacher

Dr. Mangano gave me a lot of useful feedback for the lesson I taught today. I think the most important piece of feedback is that I should not be playing with equipment throughout the lesson because it is a distraction for the students. When talking or explaining to the students I should not have a volleyball in my hand and I should not be playing with the volleyball either. Playing with the volleyball while talking to the students will distract the students and they will focus more on the volleyball than they would on what Im saying. This is not something that I even noticed throughout the lesson, I only noticed once Dr. Mangano had said it after the first lesson. Even still in the second lesson I caught myself playing with the volleyball; its good that I was aware I was doing it but I need to eliminate this behavior completely. Another piece of feedback that Dr. Mangano provided for me was with the second class I taught I used too much time for the warm up and boot camp. While the warm up and boot camp are necessary and the students were being taught a lot of muscles and body parts I did need to speed it up because the rest of the lesson felt very rushed. With 42 minutes its very tough and everything needs to be exact on time so this is why I shouldnt have used so much time on the warm up and boot camp. For the next time I teach I am going to remember

to not play with the equipment as well as try to make the warm up and boot camp(if I have one) short and concise while still including the essential information.

B.Final paragraph - discuss what was/were the most important thing(s) that you learned while teaching today. The most important thing I learned from teaching today is to remain on schedule with my lesson plan times. Especially with shorter class periods its important to really stay on schedule because if not, the rest of the lesson will probably feel rushed. This only occurred during the second lesson I taught but it just did not feel right to teach while feeling so rushed. I got to all of the activities I had planned; however, I did not spend as much time on the activities as I would have liked to. There was a combination of reasons as to why the lesson felt rushed. The warm up and boot camp took too long, the transitions were slower than normal, and I think I spent too much time informing during the second lesson. These are

three parts of the lesson that I usually do not have any problems with; however, today I did. It was by no means a failed lesson but it definitely did not meet my standards. For next lesson, Im going to stay on schedule more and keep the transitions, warm up, and informing as short as possible to maximize activity time.
