Name ___________________________ Mu of the Shoe Purpose:

Date: _________

1) To determine both the static and kinetic frictional forces on a shoe. 2) To compare the frictional forces for different pairs of shoes. Materials: 3 Different Shoes Force Meter Set of Masses Triple Beam Balance Groups can request additional materials, as needed. Pre-Lab: Find 3 shoes to use to analyze frictional forces between shoes and your lab table. Examine the shoes with your lab partner and answer the following questions: 1. Which shoe do you think will have the highest coefficient of friction? Explain your reasoning.

2. How do you think the static frictional force will compare to the kinetic frictional force for the shoes? Explain.

Procedure: Design a procedure to measure the coefficients of static and kinetic friction on each shoe. Include the following: a. A free body diagram for each test (static/kinetic). b. A data table for recording all necessary measurements. c. An explanation (or sample calculation) to demonstrate how the collected data will be used to calculate the coefficient (). d. A diagram of the set-up (with descriptions where necessary).

Details must be provided such that another student could repeat the experiment.

Calculations: Determine the s and k for your shoe. You must show your calculations for at least one of the shoes below. Include the equations and substitution with units.)

Conclusion Paragraph: Write a summary of the lab that includes a discussion of the each of the following: 1. What was the purpose of the lab? 2. Compare your predictions in the pre-lab with the results. Explain any differences. 3. What characteristics in a sneaker result in a larger frictional force? 4. One common source of error is pulling the force meter at an angle other than 0o with the horizontal (not parallel to the horizontal). a. Draw a force diagram to represent the forces acting on the shoe when the force diagram is pulled at some angle above the horizontal. b. How would this particular source of experimental error affect the calculate of the shoe?
