in previous years, they may find percents greater than 100%, and fractional percents, such as 0.75%, confusing. Examples from real life will help students understand these concepts. For example, if the price of a video game has doubled in the past year, we say that the new price is 200% of the old. Bank interest rates give us examples of fractional percents. The interest rate on a savings account may be advertised as 4 %, or 4.5%. Day 1 Instructions: 1. Warm up: Have students work with a partner to fill in the following chart to express percents, decimals and fractions in all 3 forms: Percent 134% Decimal 1.25 Fraction
Share answers and discuss strategies. 2. Review lesson (whole group): Students will also need practice in finding the values of a, b, and c in the relationship a% of b = c. They will need to be able to find the percentage of a given number (ex. Find 30% of 150); find the percentage that one number is of another (ex. What percent of 30 is 6?); and find the whole when a specified percentage is given (ex. 30% of what number is 20?). Real life examples can be used: Example 1: Krystal saved her babysitting money, and has $1000 to invest for one year. She chose to invest her money at an interest rate of 5 % per year. How much interest will she earn in one year? 5 % per year will yield interest of $57.50 in one year. Extension: % per month would yield interest of $77.58 in one year. Explain why?
Example 2: Students work with a partner on the following question: In Mr. Berrys class there are 9 students that are girls. This is 25% of the class. How many students are in Mr. Berrys class? Share answers and how they solved it. Discuss the most efficient strategy they used. (Answer: 36 students) 3. Students complete Practice Sheet #1 (attached) independently and pass in as a formative assessment. Correct and make note of any errors to use as examples for your instruction on Day 2. Day 2 Instructions: Warm up: 5% of a number is 25. What is the number? 1. Review lesson (whole group): Briefly review any common errors that were found from the Day 1 Practice Sheet. Review how to calculate percent increase and percent decrease using the example below then complete the following questions together: Percent increase =
increase 100 original
decrease 100 original
Percent decrease=
Example: Some items found on the menu at Burger Queen are priced as follows: Hamburger: $2.30 Med. Drink: $1.29 Med. Fries: $1.39 On Tuesdays, Burger Queen offers a sale, where a hamburger is half price if you also buy a medium drink and medium fries. What is the percentage off the regular price of your order if you take advantage of this sale? Regular price: $2.30 + $1.29 + $1.39 = $4.98 Tuesday price: $1.15 + $1.29 + $1.39 = $3.83 Savings: $4.98 - $3.83 = $1.15 Percentage off regular price: $1.15 = 0.23 or 23% off the regular price. $4.98
