As Milton Friedman said, The society that puts equality before freedom will _________________________. The society that puts freedom before equality will end up with a __________________________________. Answer #1 end up with neither Answer #2 great measure of both 10. Professor Friedman compares the concept of equality of opportunity to a race where everyone begins at the starting line at the same time. In contrast, equality of outcome guarantees that everyone finishes at the same time. Today, equality of outcome is referred to as fair shares for all. If we applied the fair shares for all concept in this class, all students would receive an average grade of C. This would be accomplished by taking points away from students earning As and Bs to give to students earning Ds and Es. Distributing points equally would result in fair grades for all. Would you approve of this method in calculating your final grade? Why or why not? How would this differ from fair shares for all economically? For example, whats the difference between a successful student being required to give up some of his/her hard-earned grade and a successful person being expected to give more of his/her hard-earned income? If you support redistribution of income and wealth, shouldnt you also be willing to redistribute academic grades? After all, many of your fellow students may not have had the advantages in education and upbringing that youve had. Address the above questions in your own words, in a minimum of 3 paragraphs. I think I would approve the method of calculating the final grade only in also assuring that everyone is participating equally as well, because it would be extremely unjust for someone to pass the class without any effort on their part. I understand that people get behind and so I

think this would benefit them, but as long as they still tried and did what they could. But this is not how the world currently works, you have to sincerely earn your grade by all your efforts and participation. If we lived in a place where people were allowed to have any job they wanted no matter the experience and no matter the college background, I think that we would face a lot of challenges. Especially when it came to the medical genre, and similar things that fall down that path. Doctors are doctors for a reason, and they are experienced and we can trust them to take care of us when in need. But I do agree that the income of all jobs should be equal, and at a fair equal rate. Therefore I believe the poverty would decrease or completely vanish and that people would be more considerate of the others around them because they are not thinking that they are better than them. Money is what controls us as people as well as our economy.

Reflective Writing
Compose 2-3 paragraphs explaining how watching Free or Equal helped you achieve at least 2 of the SLCC Learning Outcomes: After watching this show it definitely opened my eyes to different things that I never quite thought of before or even seen. I never knew that other economies were ran so freely and the most amazing part was that there was still success from it all. Yes there was still poverty in the countries that were considered free markets, but they were surviving just as us Americans do without being in a free market. It is remarkable to see how different free markets are from the United States, but how they have brought out equality because of the freedom that they are given. Watching this really made my head turn round and almost realize how unusual our government is. Letting go of the power and just giving everyone their freedom would allow everyone to be equal and who knows we might have a more successful nation if we were to follow in those footsteps. These are amazing things to consider and hopefully we can take his words of wisdom and somehow apply it into our government and into our lives as well.
