Unit Topic: _PSSA: Understanding Philadelphia through Math Grade level:8 Stage 1 Desired Results Content Standard/Established Goals(s):

: PSSA grade 8 content: Mathematical Reasoning and Connections -Students will be presented with realistic or interesting contexts in which one has to use mathematics to solve a problem. -Students will be expected to use mathematics to solve these problems on their own to make their own connections. Mathematical Problem Solving and Communications -Students will be put in the position of problem solvers for the city of Philadelphia. -Students will have to be able to present their solutions in a logical way so that they can communicate their work to their peers. -Students will be required to do group work to solve problems together. Statistics and Data Analysis -Students will use authentic sets of data in order to use them for different mathematical tasks and analyses. Understanding(s) Students will understand that society often uses math to understand and organize the world around us. Essential Question(s): How does our society make use of mathematics? How can mathematics help us to understand our surroundings? Why is it that our society values mathematics? How can I apply mathematical concepts to real world situations? Students will be able to Use grade 8 PSSA math standards to calculate problems that are relevant to understanding various aspects of life in Philadelphia.

Student objectives (outcomes): Students will know how to solve contextbased word problems which will cover content that will be tested on in the PSSA.

Stage 2 Assessment Evidence Performance Task(s): Other Evidence: Height of a skyscraper How do we use formulas to find the height of a skyscraper? Scatterplots of high school data What Classroom discussion Think Pair Share Presentation of solutions

Stage 3 Learning Plan Learning Activity Objectives/Goals Analyzing Philly Sports Stats Probability and Data Analysis

Formative Assessment Students will hand in classwork in which they were to explore a probability or data analysis concept using sports stats. Students can choose a famous landmark and do a geometric analysis on the shape of the building. Students will use famous Philly Businesses and calculate their projected trajectory using algebraic equations. Students will use demographic data to come up with ratios, percentages, and decimals that are meaningful to them.
