The following websites discuss women in the Victorian era and Victorian Britain. Know that although these sites are discussing Victorian women, the same ideals, norms, and expectations were held up in America during the end of the Nineteenth Century, the time setting of The Awakening.

Go to the website: http://www.musee-mccord.qc.ca/en/keys/webtours/tourID/VQ_P2_5_EN and click on View the Flash Clip. Watch the video and answer questions 1-3.

1. If a woman did not meet the feminine ideals, predict what the consequences might be for her in society.

2. Compare and contrast the rights and privileges men had during the Victorian era compared to women. How were women treated differently?

3. Knowing the feelings and ideas society had towards women, predict what it might have been like for those women who fought for citizenship and equal treatment. How do you predict men felt about women trying to gain independence? How do you guess the women were treated?

Go to the website and Answer question 4: http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/trail/victorian_britain/women_home/ideals_woma nhood_06.shtml 4. Read Wife and mother. Evaluate what it meant to be considered a true woman in Victorian Britain.

Create a comic strip from the point of view of Edna that portrays her feelings/and or actions towards her children. Go through your book and your notes and select a particular moment from the text that you want to elaborate on Ednas internal thoughts, or create ones you predict she may be thinking. For example, what do you think Ednas internal thoughts were when Adle told her, Oh think of the children. Remember them!? The comic can be thought bubbles of her internal thoughts/feelings you think she may be having, or her interacting with other characters. 8. ACTIVITY. Now, do the same thing but create a comic strip from the point of view of Adle, and her feelings/and or actions towards her children. Again, be sure to select a moment from the text and elaborate or create internal thoughts. The comic can be thought bubbles of her internal thoughts/feelings you think she may be having, or her interacting with other characters. Be sure to put in effort and creativity to you comic strips, as you will be presenting them to the class!
