Where did Whole Brain Teaching come from?

Created in 1999 by Chris Biffle, Jay Vanderfin & Chris Rekstad in CA This teaching system was created with 3 principles in mind- brain based, fun & free 2000-2010 WBT seminars grow popularity all over the country The focus Teaching challenging students If done correctly, WBT will create a fun and engaging learning environment for students

Attention, please!

One of the most important parts of teaching or working with students is being able to get their attention quickly and effectively Whole Brain Teaching uses Class, Yes Variety is important

THE 5 RULES

Whole Brain Teaching recognizes that rules are important and suggests 5 rules to use in the classroom As part of students using the whole brain, rules are taught with gestures to help students remember them and to engage them as well The more students are involved with the learning, the more they will retain The key is to keep students enagaged

THE 5 RULES

Rule 1- Follow directions quickly

Rule 2- Raise your hand before you talk

Rule 3- Raise your hand before you leave your seat ( walk) Rule 4- Make smart choices Rule 5- Keep your dear teacher happy The rules are all connected to encourage a positive learning

Gesture make your hand shoot forward like a fish

Gesture- raise your hand and use your fingers to pretend you are talkin

Gesture- raise your han and make a walking motion with your fingers

Gesture- point to the side of your head and tap 3 times

A happy teacher allows for an engaged, positive and productive classroom

The 3Peat Attention getter/focuser

Teacher says a direction 3 times and students respond back saying it 3 times Works well during transition times Encourages active listening Reminds students of task at hand Examples: Lines, Lines, Lines ( Quiet, Forward, Shhh) Seats, Seats, Seats, Listening, Quiet, etc. If done correctly- students should be focusing on what you are saying and not on talking, fooling around, etc.

Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.
