Ancient Greece and Rome Research Paper Objective: Compare and Contrast an aspect of Greece and Rome and

develop a thesis about the comparison. Step 1: Be assigned a topic Topics: Religious practices, rituals and influence Architecture Government Lives of women Alex the great and Julius Caesar Literature Slavery Scientists and science advancements Entertainment Expansion and conquered lands Treatment of conquered peoples Lives of children Social Classes/Social Roles Sports Schooling/Education Philosophers Inventions Military strategy/weapons Economy/how they made money/made a living/what they traded/who they traded with Cities

Step 2: Day 1 and Day 2- Research- You will have 2 in class days to research. You will be expected to complete the research on your own if this is not ample time. You will need to create at least 15 note cards on each civilization using 3 or more sources. Only 1 source can be a website and the other two must be books or databases. The use of the sources should be fairly balanced. On each note card should go one or maybe two(if related) facts. On the back should go the source number from your sources page. The research cards will be counted as a 30 point homework assignment. Step 3: Day 3: In class work on introduction. (Greece and Rome are both ancient civilizations with rich history and culture which are still studied and admired today. With regards to __________, Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome are very _____________ (similar, different, have both similarities and differences.) Before you begin to write we will organize our cards and create an outline using the outline sheet provided to you. You may not start outline until all cards are complete and you must do the outline on the sheet provided in class. You may not start paper until outline is complete. The outline will organize your information and cards. Your outline will also contain your notes and commentary on the comparing and contrasting of the elements of the civilizations. The outline will be counted as a 25 point quiz grade. Step 4: Day 4 and 5: Paper will be written. Paper should be at least 2 full pages long. It needs to be typed, double spaced, font of 12.0 Times New Roman and margins should be 1.0-1.5 and no greater. You must use in-text citations using Chicago-style which requires footnotes. Before you start your paper it is best to use citation machine on the school library to create your bibliography. Then you will be able to copy and paste your footnotes into the paper as you go. 1 Please see the attached paper on how to complete in-text citations using Chicago style and be sure to click on Chicago style when you go into Citation Machine.2 Step 5: Day 6: Paper will be completed by this day. In class you will create a PowerPoint or Prezi presentation. The PowerPoint or Prezi should contain your thesis statement, your information to support the statement and pictures to accompany the slide show(8 slides- thesis statement, Greece info, Rome info, compare and contrast info). You may not complete the presentation until the paper is done. Each class member will present their presentation in class. You should not be reading word for word off of the screen but may have notes to refer to on index cards. More info to follow on presentation guidelines.
