Theodor Seuss Geisel, 1904-1991 was an America writer, poet and cartoonist. Food and Nutrition Services also celebrates this special time, recognizing how this authors use of foods in his stories can also help tell a nutrition tale, providing the student with literacy as well as a nutrition message. In The Lorax, children learn about the environment, fruit and how the trees grow from seeds through the story of the truffula trees which were being cut down. The who pudding and who hash are stolen in How the Grinch Stole Christmas, providing an opportunity for children to discuss favorite holiday foods which are customary in their homes. Green Eggs and Ham provide the opportunity to discuss eating breakfast and trying foods one may not like. Whenever possible, read with your children. Enhance their knowledge of food by discussing food items presented in literature.
