Simply put:genetically modified food Genetically modified food is becoming increasingly more common in the world, epi cally

as the world population grows the need to provide more food is troubling people all aro und the world from Africa to the growing number of people without decent meals each day in the U.S. The idea behind this paper is to inform people and three simple questions, first what is genetically modified food? second how is genetically modified food made? and finally is gene tically modified food safe for human and animal consumption? Genetically modified food is food that's DNA has been spliced with DNA from anot her plant or even another animal so genetically modified food can grow immunities to things l ike frost. For example "Monsanto, the largest genetics research company in the world, developed a tomato that could survive cold nights in the summer. They did this by combining the gen e in an arctic flounder that allowed it survive the cold waters, into the tomato." (For more in formation check out the video where this was found http://youtu.be/jAP6ZtfP9ZQ) so in conclusion gen eitcally modified foods are foods in which their DNA has been combined with a bunch of di fferent organisms to make plants stronger. How is genetically modified food made? Genetically modified food is made by isol ating the specific gene strand that scientist know will help the specfic in the way design ed. Next they spin the gene strand in a variety of complicated ways until it finally is ready to mi x with the DNA of the desired crop. "After transformation, various methods are used to differentiate b etween the modified plant cells and the great majority of cells that have not incorporated the desired genes. Most often, selectable marker genes that confer antibiotic or herbicide resistan ce are used to favor growth of the transformed cells relative to the nontransformed cells.(Copyright 2010 African Biosafety Network of Expertise (ANBE))[2]" finally the step is getting p ollination to happen this is done in a controlled as to make sure the genes survive Ever since genetically modified food was introduced people how harmful or helpfu l they are. Should they be eating them? Genetically modified food is not necessarily bad for you, but not very good for you either. It really all depends on what food has been modified a nd how it's been modified. For instance Monsanto created corn that was combined with a bacteria t hat was found in soil which repealed insects. But when combined with corn the farmers who ate it and grew it ended up getting the secretion on them the corn was called back. On the other ha nd genetically modified food is around and most don't end up with major drawbacks like the Mons anto corn, the U.S. is a big producer and consumer of genetically modified food and yet most pe ople don't have

problems. As you can see from the graph [ graphic 1] the US is the biggest produ cer of GM foods so we have created a culture that is used to GM foods.

In conclusion genetically modified food is prevalent all over the world, and whi le the more and more people look for a need of food, genetically modified might not be the answe r but as of right now it seems to be a good path foreword once its perfected. bibliography 1."Genetically Modified Foods: Harmful or Helpful?"
