Starting from adolescence to adulthood, promoting safe sex and prevention against sexually transmitted diseases, have been practiced in the American culture. Sexual education classes start in as low as fifth grade. These classes teach kids how to properly put on a condom, ways to prevent STDs. and other contraceptive alternatives. There are many ways to practice safe sex but the most common method of safe sex is using trustworthy condoms. Trojan condoms are one of the most popular and well respected brands on the market. One reason why is because there ads successfully influence the public in practicing safe sex. Trojan ads sell their products effectively by use Ethos, Logos, and Pathos to persuade consumers in believing that condoms do prevent STDs almost 100% the time. The Trojan ad uses the appeal of ethos in many ways to convince the general public in using Trojan brand condoms while practicing safe sex. Ethos is portrayed in this ad by promoting it as a brand name condom that is very popular to the public. It is also seen as the number one trusted condom brand nationwide. C.M Roland states, Since 1986, condom sales have increased by 68%. This is important because as condom sales go up, it ensures that safe sex is being practiced amongst the public. Sale increases progress due to persuasive advertisements, and Trojan condoms have many diverse advertisements, which hold a grand social image in the public eye. There is an ad about Trojan condoms almost anywhere; the ads range from magazines, commercials, to radio advertisements. This ad also uses logos in a way to convince the audience that Trojan condoms are the best condom brand to purchase. Such as when the ad states, Be a man. Wear a condom every time. No one likes a pig, showing that the brand believes in the idea of practicing safe sex. This reflects logos because there is reasoning to wear a condom, and men more than likely do not want to be seen as a pig because they are a naturally disgusting animal. The ad has a very

effective wording that directs the viewers to think about the underlying message within the text. As stated above, the author is saying that every guy that doesnt use a condom is seen as a pig. The author is aiming towards men, and trying to convince men that practicing safe sex is more appealing to the opposing sex. Brian Morrissey, from Trojan Evolves Its Message Online cites a source from Craig Lambert declaring, Statistics showing one in four teenagers is infected with an STD. In the ad, the word Evolve is set in a bold, yellow print in order to show the emphasis that men need to evolve away from being pigs, and using Trojan condoms will help them do so. It seems as though the AIDS crisis has made condoms more socially acceptable sales items (Chain Drug Review). Trojan has also made other ads insisting that men are all pigs until they purchase condoms to avoid risky situations. Pathos is heavily used in order to create an emotional appeal to the audience. The ad heavily appeals to men who have sex, emotionally targeting men who dont use condoms, and portraying them as disgusting pigs. Therefore it causes men to rethink their decisions to practice safe sex and analyze how true that statement really is. This ad can help persuade men in thinking that if they choose to wear a condom, they are more than likely to have sex with women in social atmospheres. Also promotes the idea that men who use protection are more attractive to women and have a higher chance of having intercourse if they do use protection. Enhanced-sensation products are the fastest-growing segment of the category and already account for more than 50% of all condom sales, Kline notes.(Chain Drug Review), this also encourages safe sex by giving a larger selection of products to make intercourse a pleasurable activity to shop for. Men may initially feel offended, especially if protection is not of importance, but Trojan reinforces that any man can evolve as long as they make the right decisions.

This ad is effective when convincing men that practicing safe sex is important, and uses the three appeals of logos, ethos, and pathos. Trojan clearly emphasized the message and was very emotionally appealing to the audience which helped grab the attention of whoever the reader may be. The use of pigs causes audience to remember the ad and to make the right decision to practice safe sex. There was a strong message within the advertisement and was portrayed in a unique manner. Although STDs are becoming more widespread, the proper use of condoms can prevent a small percent, which can ultimately alter into even greater numbers.
