Up, Up, and Away! Strategy: We will be using the Language Experience Approach strategy, which is when the teacher provides an experience for the students, who then dictate back to the teacher the things that they learned in order to enhance their learning and understanding. This allows the teacher to see what the students have learned, and also to guide the students through their thoughts in order to model reading and writing for the students. Audience: Our audience includes twenty-seven five and six-year olds in a year one classroom. Most students are Caucasian, and there are about 4 nonCaucasian students; some of African descent and some from Asian descent. The majority of students are native English speakers, and there are two English Language Learners. One student possibly has special needs in speech and language. We are assuming that the students know what an airplane is, and possibly have had some experience on airplanes. We are also assuming they have knowledge about travelling. The students know how to respond verbally to the teacher about what they have learned. For the student who has a possible speech and language disability, we will place her in the front of the group so that she is able to focus, listen to the reading, and see the written words. For the English Language Learners, we will be sure to fully explain some of the new words or objects out loud that they will encounter, such as a boarding pass or a passport.

Grade Level Content Expectation (GLCE): W.GN.00.03 write a brief informational piece such as a page for a class book using drawings, words, wordlike clusters, and/or sentences.

Assessment: We expect the students to learn the procedures of the airport and the safety and basics of flying in an airplane. As we go through the simulation in the immersive room, we will ensure that students are performing traveling tasks in the appropriate manner and sequence. When we review the lesson with the language experience approach, we will observe their reactions and listen to their responses to ensure that they have learned the steps of traveling on an airplane. What is Happening in the Lesson Classroom Management (5 minutes) For whole group instruction during orientation and student dictation, the students will be sitting on the carpet. In order to transition, the star of the week will call on students to line up to go to the immersive room. In the immersive room, they will be in a whole group sitting on the floor. To transition into their seats at their tables, the star of the week will dismiss them by group. The students will be expected to sit quietly during while the teacher is speaking, and while their peers are responding to questions. If they have an answer, they are expected to raise their hand quietly. Before lining up, they are expected to wait to be called on by sitting quietly and patiently with a smile on their face. Also, to walk quietly in the corridor. In the immersive room, they are expected to react openly, but at the appropriate times and quietly. These are the standards Mrs. Delaney has expected of the students during the school What is Being Said in the Lesson

For our journey today, I need you to come sit at the rug, quietly and sensibly. We will be going to the immersive room today, so everyone needs to be respectful of one another, use their manners and be quiet in the corridor as well.

year. We will let them know we will expect the same behavior while we are teaching. We will manage our time by looking at a watch. Our materials will be ready and handy when they need to be used for smooth transitions. We will use the clap rhythm to get the students attention, and also count down from 5 when transitioning onto the rug. We will maintain the clapping to get the students attention, the countdown method and the star of the weeks role in helping with transitions because these methods of management work very well for the students.

Now well have our star of the week call on all of the students who are sitting sensibly on the carpet with a big smile to go to the immersive room.

Orientation (5 minutes) The purpose of the lesson is for the students to learn about what its like to travel on an airplane, which supplements their journey theme for the week. We will ask the students where they have traveled to on their holidays. Then, we will ask the students if they have traveled by airplane to activate their prior knowledge. We will also talk about how weve traveled by airplane from Michigan to get here to Liverpool. Next, we will show the students a map on the smart board, mark our flight path, and show our passports so that we can share our journey with the students to motivate them to learn. Today, were going to be talking about traveling and journeys. How many of you have traveled somewhere by car, bus, train, airplane, or boat? ESR-hands raise Where are some places youve gone? Teachers calls on student ESR-Miss, Ive been to Camelot! ESR-London! How many of you have traveled on an airplane on one of your trips? ESR-hands raise Well talk about what its like to travel on an airplane; like how to board a plane and what to do once you get on the airplane. Miss and I have traveled on an airplane all the way from

Michigan in the U.S. to come to Liverpool! This is how far weve come. When we traveled, we had to use our passports because we traveled into a different country. It shows our name, picture, birthday, and where we live. You always need one if youre traveling to a different country. Now well go to the immersive room. The star of the week will choose students who are sitting beautifully to go line up.

Literacy Strategy 1. Provide an experience (30 minutes) We will read the book Barnaby Bear goes to Dublin to the students, which is about a bear who rides on an airplane, and have them participate in a simulation of the airport, airplane and also the final destination. The students and teacher will demonstrate how to check in at the airport, and get on the airplane by showing your passport. Now were going to show you what its like to be in an airport. We will go through all of the steps together. Miss and I will guide you through the airport to make sure you get on safely. First, lets all go up to the counter to collect your boarding passes. Heres your boarding pass.

ESR-Thank you, miss. On the airplane, you have to be safe by buckling your seat belt and listening to Next, you will go through security! the flight attendant. Show us your passports, and make sure you dont have anything dangerous in your bag.

Is there anything dangerous in your bag? (Application) ESR-No, miss. Nothing in my bag. Thank you. Ill take your boarding pass and you may move onto the airplane. 4

Please fasten your seatbelts until weve landed. Were finally here! Weve reached our destination. Unhook your seatbelt, make your way off and see where weve landed! 2. Talk about the experience (3 minutes) We will ask the students questions about their experience in the simulation. What did it feel like in the immersive room? (Evaluation) ESR-It felt like we were really at the airport! What are some things that you did? (Comprehension) ESR-We checked in. ESR-We got a boarding pass! ESR-We had to get our bags checked. ESR-We got to ride in an airplane, but we had to fasten our seatbelts. 3. Record the students dictation (5 minutes) The students will tell us the steps of traveling by airplane that they learned through the book and the simulation. We will write them down on a large piece of chart paper as they give their responses. After we write the response, we will orally repeat it to the students. What should you do when you first arrive at the airport? (Comprehension) ESR-check in with your ticket. Thats right! Teacher writes down response Eva is going to check in her ticket when she gets to the airport. What comes next? (Comprehension) ESR-you go through security and get 5

your passport checked. Teacher writes response You get your passport checked. And what are the next steps? (Comprehension) ESR-you wait to get on the plane and then find your seat. ESR-you buckle your seatbelt and listen to the flight attendant tell you about safety. Teacher writes response Harry will get onto the airplane and find his seat, and Rachel will safely buckle her seatbelt and listen to the flight attendant. 4. Read the text aloud (2 minutes) After each response is written on the paper, the teacher will repeat what the student said. Also, after the entire list is finished, the teacher will review the whole list out loud again. 5. Extend the reading experience (omitted) We are omitting this because it requires work with phonics concepts that does not relate to our objective. 6. Make sentence strips (omitted) We are omitting this step because we have reviewed and reinforced the steps multiple timeless previously in the lesson. Now lets read it all together. I will read it all out loud first, and then we can read it a second time all together. Teacher reads, students join in the second time

Closing (15 minutes) We will close the lesson by finishing up To prepare for our flight, we check in, 6

the language experience approach and reviewing what they learned from the book and simulation. After this, the students will create and decorate their own passports as a fun, hands-on activity.

go through security and get our passports checked, get into your seat, buckle your seatbelt, and listen as the flight attendant gives you instructions. Congratulations! You have all earned your passport! You are ready to go! The next time you take a holiday, you will be ready to fly on an airplane! You did a wonderful job learning how to board and ride a plane. Okay, now you are doing a fun activity! You will make a passport so you can show your friends and family what you learned about airplanes and maybe go somewhere yourself one day!
