April 19, 2012 Third Grade/Math

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES / STUDENT OUTCOMES Students will be able to determine the probability of an event happening. Students will have an understanding of the vocabulary used when determining probability. Students will be able to predict the probability of a certain outcome by visual assessment. apply estimation skills to solve and evaluate reasonableness of an answer develop and conduct grade-appropriate experiments using concrete objects to determine the likeliness of events and list all outcomes analyze real-world data represented on a graph using grade appropriate questions

NATIONAL STANDARDS 2.3 Mathematics - Candidates know, understand, and use the major concepts and procedures that define number and operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, and data analysis and probability. In doing so they consistently engage problem solving, reasoning and proof, communication, connections, and representation dents should recognize and generate equivalent forms of commonly used fractions, decimals, and percents. MANAGEMENT FRAMEWORK Overall Time: 90 minutes Time Frame: 2 minute introduction to lesson topic 5 minute KWL chart (diagnostic assessment) 50 minute SMARTBoart presentation/activity 5 minute teacher-led demonstration of worksheet 20 minute individual student worksheet 5 minute question session 3 minute closure STRATEGIES Teacher/student led discussion, group review, class interaction with SmartBoard, KWL chart. DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION / ADAPTIONS / INTERVENTIONS See attached. PROCEDURES Introduction / Lesson Set I will start off by telling the student the focus of the lesson today (probability) and introducing the KWL chart to the class. Ask students if they are familiar with the chart, and if not, describe its usage. As students what they know about probability and fill out the K portion of the chart based on their responses. Next, ask what they want to know about probability and fill out W portion of the chart. Advise students that we will revisit the chart after completion of lesson to fill out the L portion.

Body & Transitions I will first ask the students what is probability? and allow them to give multiple answers, if needed. Introduce SMARTBoard presentation to answer what is probability and begin lesson o http://exchange.smarttech.com/details.html?id=58a7a05d-59c1-47bc-bb970189287cf4b9 Slide two and three introduce and practice the different vocabulary used in working with probability- discuss thoroughly and follow slide instructions. o Impossible o Unlikely o Equally likely o Likely o Certain Follow slides and allow students to interactively answer questions. Allow each student the opportunity to come up to board to do activities given on the board. Upon completion of slide, students will complete worksheet on information learned (see attached). As the students finish the given questions on the worksheet, they are to jot down information they learned during the lesson in order to complete the L portion of the KWL chart Papers will be taken up and students will be given the opportunity to ask questions about anything they did not understand. Closure Students will share information they have learned from lesson as we complete the KWL chart together as a class. Students will again be given the opportunity to ask questions after we have completed chart. ASSESSMENT Diagnostic Students will help the teacher compile a KWL chart as a class discussion in order to assess prior knowledge and their ability to indicate knowledge they wish to gain on the topic of probability. Formative Students will have to back up answers to the questions they are asked. When given a response, the students will be asked why they chose the answer they did on order to understand how they reached that conclusion. I will also allow plenty of opportunity for students to ask questions on the information they are given. During the time allotted for the worksheet, the students will be monitored closely to make sure they understand the task at hand. Summative Students will complete a worksheet to assess knowledge learned. Students will also complete the L portion of the KWL chart. Students will be forced to think about what they have learned and discuss it with the class and teacher.

MATERIALS SMARTBoard presentation located at Smart Exchange: o http://exchange.smarttech.com/details.html?id=58a7a05d-59c1-47bc-bb970189287cf4b9 Worksheet EXTENDED ACTIVITIES If Student Finishes Early Students are to write a synopsis of what they have learned in order to complete the KWL chart on the back of their worksheet. If Lesson Finishes Early If lesson finishes early, we will use SMARTBoard to play game, as a class, on probability: o http://exchange.smarttech.com/details.html?id=d5f2eb2a-531b-4578-8e2e66bd0c01e2e6
