Leo Lubow B'More: The Photographic Portfolio 23 January 2014 Artists Statement: Black and White Perspective Perspective is a concept that I feel refers to two different ideas: one in a sense of the traditional definition of the word, and the other in a sense of the photographic definition. Traditionally, perspective refers to a certain way in which you view something. This may be in terms of the angle in which you look upon an object, or the varying levels of focus that are placed on certain things. On the other hand, the photographic definition of perspective is the sense of depth or spatial relationships between objects in the photo, along with their dimensions with respect to the viewpoint (Sudipta Shaw). My portfolio includes a collection of photographs taken at the Baltimore Museum of Art, areas around Fells Point, and at various locations on the Homewood Campus. The photographs embody either or both of the aforementioned ideas of perspective. All of the included photos are taken in black and white, which accentuates the idea of depth through varying shades of black. The elimination of colorwhich might act as a distractionalso directs the attention of viewers to perspective elements, which is the overarching theme of the portfolio that is intended for conveyance. During the photo-taking process, I tried to focus on taking photos from unique angles in order to capture images that feature uncommon perspectives that work towards the development of interesting photos. The resulting images feature scenes that portray diverse points of views, which tend to create the illusion of 3-D in otherwise flat photos.
