The Beginnings of Prom

Prom used to be a formal dance and the young ladies would hope to leave the night with a marriage proposal. In the 20th century this courtship ceremony switched to more of a coming of age ceremony.

Important Events of 1940-1950

World War II begins December 7, 1941 America joins the fight after attack on Pearl Harbor In 1954 racial segregation is ruled unconstitutional in public schools. The Federal Highway Act is signed and the first major highways are created in 1956

1940s and 1950s Fashion Trends

1940s Girls were encouraged to wear pants more L-85 and L-90 restrictions Military and slim style 1950s - Young women wore the poodle skirt and men adopted the greaser style with leather jackets and slicked back hair. - Mens suits were single breasted with a slim lapel.

Prom Decorations
In the midst of the war and the recovery afterwards, prom was an escape for teenagers. During the 40s and 50s proms became very elaborate with themes and decorations.
