Assignment #2 Given Friday September 20, 2013 Due Friday September 27, in assignment box

1. A clay has undrained shear strength cu = 30 kPa. The total vertical stress is 80 kPa. If the total horizontal stress is actually less than 80 kPa, determine its magnitude such that undrained shear failure occurs. Also show the pole point and the angles at which the conjugate shear planes of failure act.

2. A sand has drained shear strength described by = 37. The effective horizontal stress on a point in the soil is 90 kPa. Determine the effective vertical stress (less than horizontal) to cause failure; show the location of the pole point; and determine the angles at which the conjugate shear planes of failure act.
