ALAKH NIRANJAN. Lakshana mean attributes. A-lakshana refers to the sightless and attributeless God or Nirguna Brahman.

Alakshnya refers to one that cannot be perceived meaning without distinctive marks. Alakshanam is being without features. Niranjana means spotless. Niranjan, an epithet for Lord Shiva, means spotfree, One who cannot be seen or tainted. In other words Sat-Chit-Ananda. Niranjanoham means I am spotlessly pure. Nirankara means without form and Nirakara Brahman is the formless Brahman. This idea of the Absolute or Nirguna Brahman comes from Yoga traditions having its source in Swetashwetara Upanishad. By legends, Alakh Niranjan was uttered by Rishi Dattatreya, the initiator of the Nath tradition and also his disciple Yogi Matsyendranath and in turn Gorakshanath. The term Alakh Niranjan, came into popular use after Yogi Gorakshanath. It

was also used by Guru Nanak in the Sikh tradition. The term is used as a synonym for the Creator and to describe the characteristics of the Self or Atman.
