InmyworkasaSpeakingSkillsCoachonSkype,mycommitmentistoworkwithpeoplesothat theycanachievetheircommunicationobjectivesandfeelbetteraboutthemselves.Foreachof myclients,Ifollowamethodthatallowsmetocloselyanalysetheirspeechandcommunication skills.Iidentifythegapsintheirknowledgeinordertosupplytheknowhowandskillsthatare missingandholdingthemback.ThecoachingprocessIusemeansthattimeandeffortis focusedontheproblemareaswherethegreatestimprovementsaretobemade. Thecoachingprocesscanbebrokendownasfollows: Followingthecoachingprocessisaloopthat meansfast,observableresultsareachieved. Followingthecoachingprocessalsomeans thatthepracticalaspectsofcoaching appointmentswillbedifferentforeachofmy clients.Thisisbecausenotwoclientshave thesameproblemareasorissueswiththeir speakingskills.Inotherwords,coachingis bespokeanduniqueforeachclient. Byfollowingthecoachingloopand concentratingeffortonwhatisnotbeingdone wellalready,weareabletoachieveresultsin ashortertimeframe.Thecoachingprocessis nothinglikeregularclassroomoreven onetooneprivateteachingforthisreason.

TheclientsIworkwithdonotwantnorrequireregularteaching.Thegenericaspectofteaching theonesizefitsallapproachwhereeverybodyintheclasslearnsthesamethinghasnothing toofferthem.Theyapproachmebecausetheyneedpersonalsolutionstotheirspecific problems. 2

Forme,thegreatestdifferencebetweencoachingandregularteachingisthatthecoaching processconsidersthewholeperson,includinghisorheremotionalblocksandlimitingbeliefs. UnlessEnglishisyournativelanguage,therewillbegapsinyourknowledgeofgrammar.Evenif youareanativespeaker,yourEnglishmaynotbeconsideredstandardorgrammatically correct.Itisthesegapsinyourknowledgethatotherpeopleidentifyasmistakes.Whenother peopleunconsciouslyorconsciouslyobservethegapsinyourknowledge,itwillleadthemto makesnapjudgementsaboutwhoyouareandyourlevelofeducation.Theopinionstheyform aboutyoucanhaveseriousconsequencessuchwhethertheyconsideryouworthytoworkin theircompany.NativeEnglishspeakerscanbeespeciallyjudgementaland(silently)critical whentheynoticegrammaticalmistakes,generallybecausetheydontunderstandhowdifficultit istocommunicateinasecondlanguage.Theywillhavehighexpectationsofyou.

Coaching Tool # 2 Voice and Speaking Style Evaluation Form


Eachpersonsvoiceandspeakingstyleisafingerprintoftheirpersonality.Iamableto understandalotaboutapersonjustbyobservingthewaytheytalk.Closelyobservingthevoice allowsmetogetanunderstandingoftheemotionalblocksmyclientsmayunconsciouslybe battling. Speakingfrommypersonalexperience,theopinionsofothersregardingmyownvoiceand speakingstylehavebeenpivotalinmydevelopmentasaspeaker.Thegreatestrealisationofall camewhenIwastoldthatIhadamonotonevoice.Iknewexactlywhatmyvoicesoundedlike butithadneverclickedthatIhadamonotoneanddullvoicethatprojectedtoothersthatIwas apatheticandhadlowenergy.InmyheadIsoundedanimatedandwarm.Therewasahuge differencebetweenwhatIthoughtofmyselfandwhatothersheardwhenlisteningtomespeak. Findingoutaboutthisdifferenceledtothegreatest,personaltransformation.Knowinghowmy voicesoundedtoothersmeantthatIcouldworktoimprovemyvoiceandtheimpressionitgave ofme. IamimmenselythankfulthatIwastoldmyvoicewasmonotone,otherwise,Imayneverhave realisedthisbymyself,eventhoughIcanimmediatelyobserveamonotonevoiceinothers. Generallyspeaking,wearenotgoodatevaluatingourownvoices.Eitherwearetoocriticaland makeharsh,unhelpfulobservations,or,wearesimplytooattachedtoourvoices,whichmeans wecannottapintotheobjectiveperspectivethatisessentialwhenconductinganevaluation. TheVoiceandSpeakingStyleEvaluationFormneedstobecompletedwithapartner.Itworks bestifyoubothdotheform.Youanalyseyourpartnersvoice,andviseversa.Beforeyoubegin, agreethatyouwillbeobjectiveandthatyouwillnotsugarcoatyourobservations.Inotherwords, youarenotdoingtheevaluationformsimplytosaynicethingsabouteachothersvoicesand givecompliments. Youcanthenusetheevaluationformtogaininsightabouthowothersperceiveyourvoiceand thereforeyourpersonality.Youmayfindtheresultsoftheevaluationdeeplytransformational.If youareanythinglikeme,youwillseektochangeanythingyoudontlikeaboutyourvoicethat arisesthroughtheevaluationprocess.

Changingyourspeakingskillsisapathofgrowththatwillleadtotransformationalshiftsinyour personality,ifyouallowitto.Itismyfirmbeliefthatyoucanworktochangeanythingthatyou dontlikeaboutyourspeakingstyleandcommunicationskills.Asyoumasternewspeakingand communicationskills,youmoveclosertoyourrealself.Everytimeyouovercomeafearorblock thathasbeenlimitingyou,eithersocially,oronethathasbeenstoppingyoufromactingonyour desires,yougrowintoamoreconfidentandfulfilledperson. Themoreblocksyoufaceandbreakdown,thestrongeryoubecome.Youbegintorealiseyour unlimitedpotential.Youtakecontrolofyourreality,becomingacreatorofwhatyouwantto achieveinlifeonalllevels:professionally,emotionally,andspiritually. Graduallytransformingintothespeaker youwanttobeisatwostepprocessthat yourepeatmanytimesover.Inmyopinion, itisaprocessthatneverendsbecause therewillalwaysbesomeaspectofyour communicationorspeakingthatcanbe improved.Firstofallyouneedtoidentify onethingthatiscurrentlylimitingyouor holdingyoubackintermsof communication.Eitheryouneedtolearn somethingtofillthegapinyourknowledge, oryouneedtofaceafear.Bypurposefully confrontingyourfearsandpushing yourselftodowhatscaresyou,gradually yourfearsandsocialanxietieslosetheir poweroveryou.Youstartsmall,andkeep pushingawayatyourfearsonebyone. Importantly,youdonotoverwhelmyourself bytryingtodoeverythingatonce.

Mywholeadultlifeisproofthatfollowingthisprocessworks.LetmetellyouabouthowI discoveredthisprocessandhowitledtothefirstmajorshiftinmypersonalityhowIfacedmy fearsofrejectiontoovercomeanunrelentingandoverwhelmingfeelingofsocialawkwardness. 6

IhaveavividmemoryofbeingaroundfifteenyearsoldandaskingarelativeifIwouldalwaysfeel awkwardaroundpeoplemywholelife.Iwantedtoknowifmyfeelingofbeingdifferentandnot fittinginwouldgoawaywithtime.IwantedtoknowifIcouldchangeintoafriendlypersonthat otherpeopleliked.MyrelativetoldmethatthefeelingofawkwardnessIhadwouldnevergo away.HesaidIhadtolearntoacceptit. Theideaoflivingwithmyawkward,unsocialselfforeverfeltunbearablyawful.Ididntwantto staythesame.Theideaofthisdepressedme,Icouldhavegivenuphope,butsomehowmy relativesopinionjustdidntfeelrighttome.Ifelttheremustbeawaytochange.Ibeganto experiment,seekingtochangemyself. Ididthisbytestingthelimitsofmyawkwardness.IthrewmyselfintosituationswhereIfelt awkwardorshy(nearlyeverysocialsituationatthistimeofmylife).Overtime,situationsIonce feltawkwardinlosttheirpoweroverme.AsIfacedmyfears,Icouldfeelmyselfbecoming strongerandmoreindependent.Ifeltthesechangedeeplyatthelevelofmypersonality.
