We refer to analogies based on such causal linkages as middle-level theory. Middle-level theory refers to theories linking human behavior and natural processes to physical remains in the archaeological record. Archaeologist use this term to draw inferences in the other direction. They use this theory to build a series of modern reference collections. This means they take their archaeologist finds in the present to their behaviors in the past. This is the concept of intermediate theory between observed empirical data and general theories.
