ATC2O DANCE - GRADE 9 PREREQUISITE: NONE


In this course, you will be required to develop your dance skills through participating in Modern/Creative Movement, Jazz/Hip Hop and Ballet classes. Your learning includes the processes that form the basis for creating dance. You will study the historical development of dance and develop your own aesthetic appreciation of dancers as you participate in dance class, rehearsals and performances. The theory component will include World Dance, Dance in the Media and Health and Safety for dancers. Prerequisite: None.

ADA2O DRAMATIC ARTS - GRADE 9 PREREQUISITE: NONE


You will begin the course with improvisational comedy culminating in a performance piece for the Junior School; then, you will concentrate on the use of the body and voice through the creation of a dance/drama piece and a monologue through the context of the play Hanas Suitcase by Emil Sher. You will adapt a true story into a docudrama that will be performed for the Middle School. You will perform monologues and scenes from modern theatre. A performance night in early May will allow you to create and develop your own play. Character study will be explored throughout the year.

AMI2O MUSIC - BAND - GRADE 9 PREREQUISITE: NONE


If you enjoy playing a band instrument, or listening to band repertoire, then this stimulating and exciting course is for you. This is a performance-based course, offered primarily to students in Grades 9 and 10 to allow you to develop your technical skills on your instrument in addition to studying the principles of music theory, elements of music history, repertoire and ensemble performance skills.

The guitar is perhaps the most popular instrument in the world today. If you would like to learn how to play the guitar then this course is for you. It is aimed at the novice player or those who would like to improve their skills and learn new repertoire. We will learn chords, melody, strumming, and fingerpicking. The course will cover many different styles of music, because the guitar is employed in almost every musical genre on the planet. The repertoire will include pop, jazz, and classical music, and even some reggae, ska and salsa styles. Standard musical notation and tablature will be explored, along with improvisation and composition. There will be many opportunities for guitarists to perform at various functions and concerts throughout the school year. The guitar is a wonderful instrument for sharing music and you will enjoy this course no matter what your current level of expertise may be.

AMS2O MUSIC - STRINGS - GRADE 9 PREREQUISITE: NONE

If you are interested in playing the violin, viola, cello or bass, and enjoy playing string music, this course is for you. As a performance-based course, designed for students entering Grades 9 and 10, you will develop technical and musical skills on your instrument, and have the opportunity to perform at various school events, either solo or as part of an ensemble or both. In addition to studying rudiments of music theory, elements of music history/culture, and composers/compositional techniques, this class explores topics of special interest related to the world of strings.

AMU2OV MUSIC - VOCAL - GRADE 9 PREREQUISITE: NONE


If you are a closet singer, but have always imagined yourself improving your vocal skills, then dont miss this course. Emphasis will be paid to vocal technique, sight singing and the technique required to effectively sing both solo and in choral groups. This performance-based course will explore many types of vocal music, dictated by the tastes and musical preferences of the students who are in the class. It will include frequent opportunities for performance, both at BSS and outside. You will learn some theory and do some creative project work, designed to give you a deeper appreciation of the vocal music being performed.

AVI2O VISUAL ART - GRADE 9 PREREQUISITE: NONE


Working with colour, line, texture, tone, shape and form, students will develop visual thinking and critical analysis skills, and personal creative methods while learning to express their ideas and values. This course will also help students develop the fundamental skills, vocabulary, and cultural history for both Fine Art and Media Art courses. Each unit is designed for students to experience a variety of media and processes, develop observational skills, imagination, and the ability to experiment and grow as an artist. Embedded in the course is an exploration of art and artists throughout history.

IDC4UPA PERFORMING ARTS EXTENSION - GRADE 12 PREREQUISITE: GRADE 12 IN A PERFORMING ARTS COURSE (DRAMA, MUSIC, OR DANCE)
This unique extension course allows grade 12 Performing Arts students the chance to culminate in their chosen discipline with several options. Students may choose to examine portfolio and repertoire development for post-secondary applications, interdisciplinary projects, advanced instructor supported lessons and projects, independent inquiry projects, and non-traditional performing arts centered real-world initiatives. All these choices offer the Musicians, Actors, Singers, Directors and Dancers a chance to wrap up their time as an artist at BSS in an impressive fashion. Course dynamics and focus are based on number of applicants. All applicants must have a grade 12 course in either Music, Dance or Drama.

This course introduces students to the achievements of the classical world through the study of Latin. Students will learn vocabulary and grammar essential for reading and translating classical texts. English is the language of instruction. Through a variety of enrichment activities, such as presentations, debates, and dialogues, students will explore such aspects of life in the ancient world as trade, commerce, education, entertainment, and social customs while improving their language skills. This course is designed to enable students to begin to communicate with native speakers of the language of study. Students will use simple language and read age- and language-appropriate passages for different purposes. They will explore aspects of the culture of countries where the language under study is spoken, including social customs and the arts, by participating in cultural events and activities involving both print and technological resources. At BSS, this course will focus on the production of the BSS Yearbook possibly in a new interactive/e-book format. The course that addresses the multifaceted phases of yearbook production. Students in this course will learn the skills of Journalism, Layout & Design, Advertising, Photography, and Graphic Design. Students will also master industry specific software and the art of digital photography and photo enhancement. Classroom activities are closely related to the real world of interviewing, reporting, meeting deadlines and producing a widely viewed publication.
