If you had to be a colonial subject, what difference would living in a settler (as opposed to a non-settler) colony make

In the history of Africa imperialism and colonisation had an important role. In the waste continent of Africa colonialism was present in different forms of it. One of the differences between colonies was made by the presence or absence of the settlers. In the settler colonies there were present a substantial number of Europeans with the intention to stay, to raise their children there. Usually the possibility of owning land is an important factor in the decision of the settlers to choose this solution. The non-settler colonies were those colonies where the European colonising powers were represented mostly by the administration. Those who took part in it had no intention to remain in the colony. This is the main reason why being a colonial sub ect in a settler colony probably meant a bigger challenge than being a nati!e in a non-settler colony. It is important to mention that there were huge differences between the colonies e!en if they were non-settler colonies. "owe!er, the colonial sub ects of settler colonies must ha!e e#perienced the most trying changes due to colonisation. One of the reasons why I consider their situation more difficult is the fact that it is hard to a community to accept foreigners among them and to lose land in fa!our of them. The needs of the settlers and their beha!iour probably aggra!ated much more the situation of the nati!es in those parts of Africa where settlers were present $%outh &hodesia, %outh-'est Africa, Angola, (o)ambi*ue and +enya,. In this way they had to bear lot more humiliation, more demand for labour and to accept the fact that their lands are taken away and they are considered inferior to Europeans. "owe!er, I belie!e that the long term effects could be e!en more harmful. One of the possible long term effects of all kind of colonisation may be the lack of stability within the newly created post colonial African states and the high pre!alence of ci!il wars. In the settler colonies although the conflicts between the two races made the situation e!en more difficult to handle.
