Tank Surplus Weir

Design the surplus weir with all component parts for the details given in the table. Draw the following views to suitable scale: 1) Half plan at the top and half at foundation 2) Cross sectional Elevation 3) Half Elevation facing D/s and Half Elevation facing U/s

Design:

1) Maximum Flood Discharge (or) Run Off:

Use Ryves formula where Q is the discharge (or) Max run off in m3/sec. ;

C Ryves Coefficient for combined Catchment Area = 6.5 M = Combined Catchment Area in Sq.Km = 3000/100 = 30 Sq.Km c Ryves Coefficient for Intercepted Catchment Area = 1.5 m Intercepted catchment area in Sq.Km = ( 3000 1200)/100 = 18 Km2. And finally Q = 52.5m3/Sec = 52.5 Cumecs.

2) Length of the Weir :

Weir Formula is 1 from which we have 52.52 = .

Where H = Head of water = 1.50m. Now solving the equations, L = 17.32m. Adopt 18m allowing some provision for obstruction in flow. Dam stones are used to fix the automatic falling shutters and also to store water up to MWL. Assume their size as 200 X 200 @ 700 mm c/c. No. of clear span of Dam stones = 18 X 10000/700 and that yields 25 Number of Dam stones. UNIT III Impounding structures

Width occupied by Dam stones

= 0.2 X 25

= 5.00 m

Provide an extra allowance at 2.00 m for end contraction. Total length of the weir = 18 + 2 + 5 = 25.00m

3) Design of Weir Body Wall:

Adopt Top width = 2.20m and Bottom Width = 3.00m

4) Foundation:
Foundation Level = + 48.00m; Adopt 60cm thickness of the foundation; Bottom Level of foundation Concrete is + 48 .00 0.6 = 47.4m; Total Width of foundation concrete = 3.00 + (2 X 0.30) = 3.60m

5) Upstream side Apron:

The apron is required in U/s . But we can see puddle clay apron is provided as shown in the figure. (Refer Drawing)

6) Down Stream side Apron

The Height of the Fall = FTL GL = 51.00 4.20 = 1.80 m

Adopt 3 steps each having a vertical fall of 0.6m Hence 1st 2nd and 3rd apron fall will have a total height of 3x 0.6 = 1.8m) Provide 1:3:6 cement Concrete for 1st and 2nd apron ( 450mm thick) Also provide stop walls of thickness 45 0mm.

7) Width of the Apron

The Max fall = ( 51 50.4 ) + ( 52.5 51) = 2.1m which gives us the width of Apron as (2 X 2.1 =4.2m). So finalise the width of the Apron as 5m.

8) Design of Abutment:
Height of the Abutment = TBL GL = 54.8 49.2 = 5.60m; Adopt the top width of abutment as 450mm. Base of the Abutment = (0.4) H = 0.4 X 5.6 = 2.30m (Approx); Total width of the concrete= 2.3 + (2 x 0.3) = 2.9m.

9)

Design of Return Wall:

Height of the Return Wall at the U/s side = 3.40m; Total width at foundation = 0.4 H + 2 x (Offset) = 0.4 X 3.6 + 2(0.3) = 2.00 m (approx.); D/S Height = 0.4 Hr.= 0.4 X 1.8 = 0.720 m (say 0.80m); 2 Total Width = 0.9 + 0.6 = 1.50m at foundation;
