Why Cant I?

(From Scandalous: The Life and Trials of Aimee Semple McPherson) Why must I live under such inane authority? Why, they dont even understand the simplest history. They spout the Holy Scriptures as if it were sacred truth. Why must this be the way I have to waste my youth? Life was made for dancing under a moonlit, starry sky. If other girls go dancing, then dammit why cant I? Why must I be living under their narrow-minded roof? If there really is a God, why cant they show me proof? Why am I the fated daughter of such pompous piety? Why must I be forced to swallow such religiosity? Life was made for living every moment til you die, So dammit why cant I? Why cant I become a brilliant actress on the stage? The only acting Im allowed is when Im told to act my age! Life was made for dreaming, trusting that you can touch the sky, So dammit why cant Im seventeen, so what does that mean? What is seventeen supposed to be? Prim and proper, polite and pristine? Well, that may be a great life for some girls, but its no life for me! Life is for exploring, soaring past limits in the sky. Why wont the let me fly? Oh, tell me why cant I? This is such a changing world, An ever-rearranging world. I must make it mine by my own design! Life was made for thinking and I think therefore I am, And I dont think I want to be their sacrificial lamb! So let them build their altar like Abraham of old. Dont put me on the funeral pyre, Theres so much more that I desire. Ive got a different kind of fire; I wont be bought and sold. I will not be controlled! Life was made for dancing under a moonlit, starry sky. If other girls go dancing, then someone tell me why cant I?
