‘World Communion Sunday
“O taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are those who take refuge in‘him.
~Psaim 34:8 (NRSV)
October 4 is World Communion
Sunday. World Communion
Sunday is one of the six Special
Sundays recognized by an
emphasis and a special offering in
The United Methodist Church. It
will also be celebrated in many
other Protestant churches on the
first Sunday in October.
As we celebrate this day, keep in mind that for an increasing number of
Christians, every Sunday is World Communion Sunday (most Christians
in the world have always and still do practice weekly Communion). Our
‘own Great Thanksgiving includes the understanding that we offer our
praise, our gifts, and ourselves "with your people on earth and all the
company of heaven." This is a day to help folks connect more explicitly
our gathering at Table with the global and universal gathering of which it
is part.
During worship we will use
hymns and anthems from
around the world. We also
hope to have breads
representing countries
throughout the earth. As
we taste this “food for the
journey,” may we forever
vray for peace and
practice peace daily.

‘O Taste and See
Date: 1952
Composer: Ralph Vaughan Williams
|As many may already know,
[Vaughan Williams was an agnostic|
evolved from atheism earl
lin his life. Nevertheless, he|
omposed a vast amount o}
[religious music, even in his atheistic
ars, turning out works for church]
vices, hymns, hymn settings and|
|harmonizations, and various other
-ompositions. This short moter}
juses text from Psalm 34:8, and i
marked Andante sostenuto. It i
lscored for unaccompanied chorus|
jwith optional organ. When used,
|the organ plays a brief introductory}
[passage.
/aughan Williams captures the|
consoling nature of the text wit
junabashedly lovely music, whose|
lowing, soaring vocal line is richly]
Romantic. The choral writing is
junison at the outset, but then turns}
[polyphonic, not only imparting
lsense of greater color and harmonic]
warmth, but adding subtle|
‘contrapuntal elements to forge al
musical fabric of great beauty. The|
text of the Psalm begins, "O tastel
and see that the Lord is good,” but
‘Vaughan Williams makes mino:
‘changes here and throughout (“O|
taste and see how gracious the|
Lord is"). In the end, one must
assess this motet as a masterful
‘creation, it cannot be faulted in}
any significant way.
