La citt di Arezzo, situata al centro di quattro valli, fu una delle citt-stato etrusche e unimportante citt romana. Posta sulla collina dalla quale si domina gran parte del centro storico, svela nei suoi musei, nelle chiese, nelle piazze e nei palazzi la grande storia che si dipana dal periodo etrusco fino ai nostri giorni. Nel Medioevo fu una delle prime citt a dotarsi di un governo popolare. Nel XIV secolo, Guido Tarlati, vescovo e figura di rilievo per la storia della citt, contribu notevolmente allo sviluppo del governo locale e alla rinascita culturale ed artistica di Arezzo, dotandola di una nuova e pi ampia cinta muraria. Il Medioevo anche periodo di fioritura delle arti: si costruiscono le chiese pi importanti come la Pieve di S. Maria, straordinario esempio di romanico toscano, la Cattedrale gotica, la chiesa di S. Domenico che sar arricchita dalla straordinaria croce dipinta dal giovane Cimabue, la chiesa di S. Francesco dove Piero della Francesca lascer il suo capolavoro, La Leggenda della Vera Croce. Un secolo dopo la sconfitta di Campaldino (1289) Arezzo diventa parte del territorio della Repubblica Fiorentina. I Medici ed in particolare lopera del Granduca Cosimo I daranno alla citt un volto nuovo, ridisegnando il suo spazio pi rappresentativo, Piazza Grande con le Logge Vasariane e uno dei colli della citt con la costruzione della Fortezza. Terra di poeti e di artisti: ad Arezzo nacquero Francesco Petrarca, Giorgio Vasari e Pietro Aretino. La storia medievale rivive due volte lanno (giugno e settembre) con la Giostra del Saracino, la musica ha un grande appuntamento in settembre, il Concorso Polifonico Internazionale Guido dArezzo. Lantiquariato ha il suo appuntamento mensile nella Fiera Antiquaria ogni prima domenica del mese e il sabato che la precede, manifestazione che si svolge nellindimenticabile scenario di Piazza Grande. Oreficeria e abbigliamento sono da ritenersi le attivit economiche pi rilevanti della citt. The city of Arezzo, situated at the centre of four valleys, was one of the Etruscan city-states and an important Roman city. Set on a hill which overlooks most of the old city centre, its museums, churches, piazzas and palazzi reveal the important history which stretches from the Etruscan period down to our own times. In the Middle Ages, it was one of the first cities to equip itself with a popular government. In the fourteenth century, Guido Tarlati, a bishop and a prominent figure in the history of the city, contributed greatly to the development of the local government and the cultural and artistic revival of Arezzo, providing it with a new and larger ring of walls. The Middle Ages also witnessed a great flowering in the sphere of the arts: the most important churches were built at this time, such as the Pieve di Santa Maria, an extraordinary example of Tuscan Romanesque architecture, the Gothic Cathedral, the church of San Domenico which was later embellished by the extraordinary Crucifix painted by the young Cimabue, and the church of San Francesco where Piero della Francesca was to leave his masterpiece, The Legend of the True Cross. A century after the defeat of Campaldino (1289) Arezzo became part of the territory of the Florentine Republic. The Medici, and above all the work of the Grand-duke Cosimo I, gave the city a new appearance, redesigning its most significant public space, Piazza Grande, with the fine Loggia designed by Vasari and through the construction of the Fortezza on one of the hills of the city. A land of poets and artists, Arezzo was the birthplace of Francesco Petrarca, Giorgio Vasari and Pietro Aretino. Twice a year (in June and September) medieval history is revived in the city with the performance of the tournament known as the Giostra del Saracino; the music sphere features in September the Guido dArezzo International Polyphonic Competition. The antiques sector boasts a monthly appointment in the Antiques Fair, which is held on the first Sunday of every month and the preceding Saturday in the unforgettable setting of Piazza Grande. The most important economic sectors of the city are jewellery and fashion.
