Knuffle Bunny by Mo Willems Beginning, middle, and end flip books (preassembled) Character writing worksheets

Beginning, Middle, and End Crayons Pencils IV. Presentation The lesson will start with a review of beginning, middle, and end (the topic was discussed the previous day). o Which comes first, second, last? o Characteristics of each Read aloud of Knuffle Bunny o Asking questions as the story is read related to beginning, middle, and end Which comes first: beginning, middle or end? (Before we start the beginning) What happens in the beginning? (setting, characters, set up the story, learn important information) What comes after the beginning? What happens in the middle of a story? (main problem, main action, meat of the story) What comes after the middle? What happens in the end? (solution to the problem, wrap up of the story) o Having students make predictions about what will happen next in the story Teacher example will be shown to students (a flip book with one flap for beginning, one for middle, and one for the end with writing and drawing included) Class will verbally brainstorms ideas of things that happened in the beginning, middle, and end and the teacher will write some examples up on the board Students will then each be given a flip book which includes a space to write and draw a picture of something that happened in the beginning, middle, and end of Knuffle Bunny Teacher and teachers assistant will circulate around the room assisting students as they work on their activity o Students who request help will be prompted to try on their own or to share some preliminary ideas before aid is given. A goal of the lesson is for students to work as autonomously as possible. Students who finish early will be able to write about their favorite character from Knuffle Bunny (this activity will also be used another day with the rest of the students and the early finishers may finish on a later day). This consists of prepared writing sheet in the shape of Knuffle Bunny with lines for students to write on. If a student seems to be rushing so that he/she can be done, the student will be prompted to add more details to writing or drawings.

Beginning, Middle, and End V. Assessment Finished student projects will serve as assessments to determine if students understand beginning, middle, and end with 80% accuracy. Teachers will also take note (tally marks) of how many times they must aid a student in sounding out a word. Flip books will serve as concrete proof of student spacing and punctuation. There will be a checklist of correct v. incorrect punctuation and spacing (80% of writing will display correct spacing and punctuation). VI. Differentiation Students who are able will be asked to write more. They will also be encouraged to use more descriptive language and to create more complex sentences. Students who struggle with spelling/writing will be given help sounding out words, but the school does use a model encouraging invented spelling so except for aiding with sounding out the word, teachers will not intervene. Prompting will begin with what letter makes a ___ sound. This can continue for the entire word if necessary, but independent sounding out will be prompted. Students will be reminded of word study knowledge as well. Students who finish early will be given an additional writing activity about their favorite character in the book. Stone-Robinson Elementary uses a responsive classroom method for discipline. Students who call out repeatedly (three times) on the rug will be asked to Take a Break to regain control of themselves. This will also be the case for students who are not sitting correctly on the rug. They can rejoin the group and the teacher will briefly address the behavior when the class transitions to individual work. N. will also be given two reminders before he has to Take a Break. In addition, N. earns marbles for each subject (or loses marbles if he is disruptive, off-task) and will be reminded of this. His mother also receives an email at the end of each day that can serve as motivation to follow instructions. VII. Technology None
