7 Recognize Direct Variation

Obj.: We can graph direct variation equations and identify if a given graph represents a direct variation. CCSS: A. REI.10 & F.IF.7a MPS: 1 & 6 Homework: Page 300 (1 31 odd, 32-34) copy questions.

Direction Variation
A direction variation is described by an equation of the form where . k is the constant of variation. k is also called the constant of proportionality.

k 0

y kx

Ex2: Graph the direct variation

y int . : (0,0)

Characteristics of Direct Variation

As you can see from the graph, the yintercept of any direction variation equation is zero (0). Therefore, an equation represents direction variation if and only if (1) It is a linear equation. (2) The y-intercept is (0, 0).

1. x y 1 2.

Ex 3: Tell whether the equation represents direct variations. If so, identify the constant of variation.

no, y - int. : (0,1) not (0,0)
