Receiver-oriented Barriers

1. Mental turbulence : refers to confusion or disturbance in the mind of the receiver at the time when the message is decoded or is in the process of decoding. It can be a result of a situation, an interaction, or conflicting information. 2. Ineffective grasp of message : results from discomfort with the subject or ignorance of the subject. 3. Distractions and Preoccupations : Owing to this barrier the concentration sways from the present situation to the past and then the future. Inattentive listening is the result. 4. Difference in reception and comprehension : Decoding happens in two phases: (a) Listening to the literal meaning of the words and (b) Comprehending the meaning of the message based on perceptual field.

5. Tendency to evaluate : If the concentration gets divided between the words and the assessment of the speaker and content, the message is not grasped in totality. 6. Lack of Interest : Variations in the level of interaction and interest are obvious. Thats the reason why your interest wanes and you tune off when you find that the topic under discussion is of no direct relevance to you..

7. Lack of provision of correct feedback : If the feedback provided to the sender is inaccurate or is not in tune with the intent of the message, it can create a barrier to the communication process.
