    Violoncello Concentration

    First Year Students Goals are to establish a solid foundation of cello technique and to develop the art of music making through emphasis on intonation, quality of tone, technical facility, music reading (tenor clef) and musicality. Further exercises for vibrato and expansion of range will be included. Study materials to include the following: A. Scales/Arpeggios/Etudes: Major and Minor scales 3 octaves and arpeggios B. Etudes, technical exercises: 1. Dotzauer 113 studies 2. Schroeder 170 Foundation studies (Vol. I and II) 3. Sevcik Op.3-40 variations 4. Popper C. Sight-reading skills: Individualized instruction duets, orchestral excerpts D. Repertoire: 1. Eccles Sonata in e minor 2. Golterman Concerto #4 3. Glazounov-Minstrel song 4. Albenitz-Malquenia 5. Squire-Bourre- Tarantella 6. Rahmaninov Vocalize 7. Saint-Sans The Swan 8. Bach solo Suites for Cello (#1, #3) 9. Popper-Gavotte Second Year Students By the end of the second year, the student should play with good intonation, natural tone production, have developed an articulated left-hand, posses and expressive vibrato and have proficiency in tenor and treble clef reading and playing. Study Materials to include: A. Scales/Arpeggios/Etudes: major and minor scales 4 octaves and arpeggios B. Etudes: 1. Dotzauer 2. Schroeder Vol. II 3. Duport 21 Studies 4. Popper 5. Piatti 6. Franchome C. Sight-reading skills: Individualized instruction standard orchestral excerpts, duets/ D. Repertoire: 1. Bach Suites for solo cello (#2, #3) 2. Bach Gamba Sonatas 3. Sammartini Sonata 4. Saint-Sans Allegro Appassionato 5. Van Goens Scherzo 6. Lalo Concerto 7. Elgar Concerto

    8. Shuman Fantasy Pieces 9. Popper Tarantella 10. A selected contemporary work chosen by the teacher and the student. Repertoire will be assigned according to the individual student level. Jury: One assigned etude; scale and arpeggios. The scale will be drawn the day of the jury. Memorization is expected. Two contrasting pieces or movements from sonatas, concertos or Bach solo suites.
