The WHO/UNICEF guidelines for tarred Management of Chfdhood ines (ICI offer simple and
effective methods to prevent and manage the leading causes of seriousness and mortality in
young children. The clinical quidelines promote evidence-based assessment and testment, using
_asyndromic approach that supports the rational effective and affordable use of drugs The
{guidelines include methods for checking a childs immunization and nutrition status teaching
patents how to gve treatments at homezassessing a chil feding and counseling tosolve
feeding problems; and advising parents about when to return toa heath faclty. The approach s
{esigned for use in outpatent clinical settings with imited agnostic tools limited mecestons
andlimited opportunites to practice complicated clinical procedures

The IMCI charts and related in-service training materals provided by WHO and UNICEF, are

Before the handbook can be used, however it needs tobe adapted in two ways:
(Technical Adaptation: Al textcharts and illustrations inthe model handbook should be
carefully reviewed and, if needed, revised to make them consistent withthe nationally adapted
IMcI guidelines.
IB Pedagogical Adaptation: the model handbcok should be modified to correspond tothe
‘teaching/learning methads use by a facut. For example, a faculty may choose to revise or re
format the handbook sa stand-alone docament oro incorporate the contents of the handbook
into other materials or textbooks
The two step process of adaptation will ensure thatthe content of the handbook s consistent
