Elizabeth Howe 1 Description of Regular education teacher role in I.E.P.

team

A regular education teacher takes on many different roles. They are in charge of their classroom as well as a part of many matters that go on outside of their classroom. One of the responsibilities of the regular education teacher is to remain informed of each student in their classroom that has an I.E.P. This teacher does this by being an essential part of the I.E.P. team. The general education teacher has to modify curriculum when needed, make appropriate accommodations, and be in continual communication with the other members of the I.E.P. team. One role of the regular education teacher within the I.E.P. team is to help modify curriculum as needed for the student to remain in the regular education classroom while still being productive. This teacher should know how to diversify the curriculum to successfully include this student into the daily classroom activities. Another role is to make any accommodations that the student may need to remain in the regular education classroom as much as the student can beneficially be placed there. By doing this,

this teacher should know where the student will be best seated and what triggers frustration, and by knowing this should be able to reduce any disturbances to peers. At an I.E.P. meeting this teacher is expected to be present and come prepared with material and examples of how and what the student is doing in the regular classroom. This teacher is also

responsible for contributing thoughts when creating a behavioral plan for the student. This teacher should also come with questions for the parents and an openness to listen to possible ideas from the parent that may help in the future.

Elizabeth Howe 2 Again the regular education teacher has a plethora of roles to address on a daily basis. A superb teacher will not let an I.E.P. change any aspect of the classroom learning. Students with I.E.P.s will each be a unique experience that should teach the teacher a little every day.
