SUBJECT INCHARGE: Amandeep SUBJECT NAME: Optical Fiber Communication SEM 7th SUBJECT CODE : EC-404

1) Compare FDM and TDM. 2) Draw the various code lines diagram. 3) Derive an expression for numerical aperture of optical fibre in terms of refractive indices. A step index fibre has an acceptance angle in air of 20 deg. And a relative refractive index difference of 1%. Estimate the numerical aperture and the critical angle at the core-cladding interface. 4) The LED having a spectral width of 18nm is used a light source. The length of optical fibre is 25 km. At the output the pulse is spreading because of material dispersion. The value of pulse spreading per kilometre is 1.76ns/km. Then calculate the amount of material dispersion. 5) A multimode step index fibre is having the length equal to 5km. The refractive index of core and cladding layer is 1.5 and 1.45 respectively. Calculate: relative refractive index difference, the delay difference between slowest and fastest modes at the output, rms pulse broadening. 6) For a multimode graded index optical fibre the rms pulse broadening at the output is 15ns/km. The length of optical fibre is 10km. If the refractive index of core is 1.4, then calculate: refractive index of cladding layer and the delay difference at the output.
