Code: 9D12106b M. Tech I Semester Regular & Supplementary Examinations, April/May 2013 SOIL DYNAMICS & MACHINE FOUNDATIONS (Geotechnical Engineering) Time: 3 hours Answer any FIVE questions All questions carry equal marks ***** 1 (a) (b) What is the data that is required for carrying out design of machine foundations? What are the different types of machine foundations? Explain their suitability to various types of machines. What are the six degrees of freedom for a rigid block? Derive the equation of motion for a damped single degree of freedom model under fixed vibrations. What is the expression for amplitude when the excitation is quadratic? Explain the characteristics of soils under dynamic loading. A vibration test was conducted on a foundation block resting on soil. The amplitude of the first peak was 7.2 mm on an oscilloscope. The second peak was not recorded clearly. If the amplitude of the third peak was 2.2 mm, determine the damping factor of the system. If the critical damping coefficient is 0.3, find the damping coefficient. Explain the salient features of elastic half-space approach to the design of machine foundations. Discuss the Hsiehs theory of machine foundation analysis. Discuss in detail analog parameters of Lysmer & Richart et.al and Gazetus parameters for pile foundations. What is elastic uniform compression (Cu), and uniform shear ( )? Explain their importance. How to determine the uniform shear in the field? Explain it clearly. Give an account of I.S. Code of practice for the design of foundations for impact type machines. Write down the principles followed by I.S. Code for design of foundations for reciprocating type machines. What are the methods of vibration isolation? Explain the properties of rubber and cork as isolation materials. ***** Max. Marks: 60
