Survival Book Project

Name: ______________________ # _______

Your at-home book project for your Survival/Adventure book will be to make a survival kit for your main character to get through his or her particular challenge(s) in the book. Your survival kit should be put in a container that is no bigger than a shoebox. It can be a shoebox, or it can be another container. Be sure the container has the title of the book, the author of the book, your name, and the name of the kit. (Example: Julies Arctic Survival Kit). You should include at least 4 physical items in your kit, but no more than 6. Be creative to make items from everyday materials. We can supply some items from our class art supplies if you need something we have that you cannot get at home. Each item should either be something that was actually used by your main character(s) to survive, OR something your character(s) could really have used in one of the dangerous situations faced in the book. Each item should be labeled to tell what it is, and in which actual situation in the book it could be useful. You will need to describe the event with enough details for the reader of the label to know when and how it was or could have been used in the story. EACH LABEL WILL BE A TITLE AND A PARAGRAPH (at least 5 sentences). The last item in your kit should be a trait that your character needed to survive. It, too, should be labeled to tell when and how your character used it. (Examples of character traits include intelligence, courage, persistence, creativity.) For this project, you will hand in rough drafts of the labels only. The container and physical objects will be brought to school with the final write-ups of your labels on the project due date. Due Dates: Friday, Jan. 17 Rough draft: First two labels (paragraphs) for physical items. Wednesday Jan. 22..Rough draft: 3rd and 4th labels for physical items plus character trait label Thursday, Jan.30.Final project due ORAL PRESENTATION In the first week of February, you will present your survival kit to the class. You should practice to: 1) introduce your book without giving the end away and 2) describe each item in the kit and how it was (or could be) used without reading from notes or your labels. We will record these presentations for possible use on your ePortfolio.
