Project 16474EZ:

Wooden Coat Hanger

A couple of hours in the workshop is all that’s needed to turn out a half-dozen of these
sturdy hangers — and what household can’t use a few more in each closet? We made
ours from 3/4" thick oak, but if made from aromatic cedar, the hangers will help keep the
moths at bay.
Wooden Coat Hanger Complete Schematic
Wooden Coat Hanger Step-by-Step Instruc-
tions
1. Cut the 3/4" stock to a width of 6" and a length of 17".
2. Transfer the profile from the drawing to the stock.
3. Use a band or saber saw, and, staying slightly on the waste side, cut out the pro-
file.
4. File and sand the profile to the marked line.
5. Equip a router or shaper with a 1/4" radius bit.
6. Round over all the edges to a 1/4" radius.
7. Make the hook from 3/16" diameter steel or brass stock, bending it with a pair of
pliers to work the rod into the curved shape.
8. Bore a 3/16" diameter hole to a depth of 1-1/2".
9. Use epoxy to glue the hook in place.
10. Final sand the hanger.
11. Apply two coats of Watco Danish Oil.

nal (May/June 1984, page 34).
