Literary Elements - Idioms

Many idioms, if taken LITERALLY, create truly humorous

images. Could you picture a storm where it was literally
(actually) “raining cats and dogs” or a person who was truly
“two faced”? In this activity, you will create “literal” cartoons
out of idioms.

Directions:

Step #1: Using the attached template, pick an idiom that

conjures (makes you think) of a funny image when taken Finding a needle in a haystack

literally and write the idiom in the space on the leaf template.

Step #2: Illustrate AND COLOR a cartoon that depicts (shows) the idiom’s literal meaning.

Step #3: On the back of the leaf, (yes it is supposed to be upside down!!) write the idiom’s
actual meaning and a short descriptive paragraph using the idiom properly.
