Sura: Al-An’aam
Ayat 99

And He it is Who sends down water from the cloud, then We bring forth with it buds of all (plants),
then We bring forth from it green (foliage) from which We produce grain piled up (in the ear); and of
the palm-tree, of the sheaths of it, come forth clusters (of dates) within reach, and gardens of grapes
and olives and pomegranates, alike and unlike; behold the fruit of it when it yields the fruit and the
ripening of it; most surely there are signs in this for a people who believe.

The green factory in plants

This Ayat of Quran tells us that there is a ‘green’ factory in the plants which produces grains. Green factories are
built up by the plant at the beginning of its growth and are called by botanists “Chloroplasts” which contain the
chlorophyll. Quran uses the term ‫ خضرا‬for these green factories. Chlorophyll absorbs the light necessary for
photosynthesis.

Chloroplasts
An examination of leaves, stems, and other types of plant tissue reveals the presence of tiny green, spherical structures called
chloroplasts, visible here in the cells of an onion root. Chloroplasts are essential to the process of photosynthesis, in which
captured sunlight is combined with water and carbon dioxide in the presence of the chlorophyll molecule to produce oxygen and
sugars that can be used by animals. Without the process of photosynthesis, the atmosphere would not contain enough oxygen to
support animal life.

It is amazing that Quran mentions the chloroplasts and chlorophylls which were discovered many centuries after the
revelation of Quran.

This document is based on my under process book. I plan to collect all the Ayaats of the Holy Quran with deal with
scientific, historical and archaeological subjects. I am trying to provide explanation to those Ayaats in light of
Previous commentaries (Tafaseer), established science, archaeological discoveries and Arabic lexicons. Send in
your comments, queries and suggestion at Muhammad.Awais.Tahir@gmail.com

Please do not copy paste without permission, until my book is published, Insha’Allah.
