Ayat 14

Say: Shall I take a guardian besides Allah, the Originator of the heavens and the earth, and He feeds
(others) and is not (Himself) fed. Say: I am commanded to be the first who submits himself, and you
should not be of the polytheists.

Creation from Nothing

This Ayat tells us that Allah is ‫( فاطر‬originator) of the heavens and the Earth. Other Ayaats of the Quran also use the
word ‫ بديع‬for originator. Both these term refer to the creation out of nothing.

Word Analysis: Hazrat Ibn e Abbas said that I came to know the exact meaning of ‫ فاطر‬from a Bedouin. He was
fighting with one of his companion. They had some controversy over a well. The Bedouin said ‫ انا فطرتها‬meaning that I
created it first. Hence, meaning of this Ayat becomes that Allah formed this universe out of nothing without any
previous example (TAFSIR IBN E KATHIR 4/382, UNDER THE EXPLANATION OF 35:1). This topic has been discussed in detail
under Surah Baqarah 2:117.

Using the word ‫بَدِيع‬: Surah Baqarah 2:17, Surah Anaam 6:101.

Using the word ‫فاطر‬: Surah Anaam 6:14, Surah Yusuf 12:101, Surah Faatir 35:1, Surah Zumar 39:46, Surah Shura
42:11.
