Guide to the Havening I Agenda
The Morning: General Education Assessment
The results from last year’s assessment are in and have been reported both to the Gen Ed
Assessment Committee and to our Dean as part of the broader “2008-2009 Department
‘Assessment Report” (see attached file). At the Havening we will discuss last year’s findings and
prepare to assess the same student learning outcomes (SLOs) this Fall semester. Members of the
Writing Committee and of the Literature Committee will lead two separate workshop!presentations on ENG110 and ENG200-level assessment, respectively. The assessment
instruments (assignment prompts) and rubrics from last year are available in the attached “2008-
2009 Department Assessment Report.” However, based on feedback from the department, the
ENG200-level prompt and rubric have been revised for this year's round of assessment (see
attached), and these new versions will be considered for official adoption at the Havening.
Note: Everyone must complete assessment of his or her Gen Ed 110 and 200-level courses THIS
EALL unless doing so would create considerable hardship (if this is so for you, talk to me). If
you are teaching a particular 200-level course in the Spring only, then you may also need to
assess that course in the Spring (talk to me).
The Afternoon: Acadei Program Review (APR)
‘Our department begins its APR this year with a Self-Study Report that is due June 2010.
Everyone in the department will be involved in creating this report, the Guidelines for which are
attached. Ihave also attached the Self-Study and the External Reviewer's report from our last
‘APR from 2003-04, In the afternoon at the Havening, we will discuss two items pertinent to this
year’s APR Self-Study:
1. The Department's Mission Statement: Work on drafting a mission statement began at
last year’s Havening. Moving forward from that work, the Writing and Literature Committees
have created four different mission statement versions (attached) for our consideration at this
year’s Havening, where we can vote for the adoption of one as is or as revised.
2. The Department's Goals and Programmatic Outcomes: We currently have one set of
“Student Learning Outcomes for English Major” that apply to the Rhetoric and Writing and the
Literature Emphases (attached). We also have a set of Rhetoric and Writing Emphasis Outcomes
(attached). At the Havening, I will facilitate a review and discussion of our current sets of
‘outcomes, hoping to elicit ideas on how best to create/keep outcomes that manifest the
department's mission (I realize this may put the outcomes-cart before the mission-horse alittle
bit), This will be a beginning conversation about where to go from here, and it may include
discussion of some of the following questions:
= Are we happy in general with the current departmental outcomes?
* Is the Education major adequately addressed in our current departmental outcomes?
* Do we want to have separate outcomes sets for each of our three emphases, or would we
prefer to focus on one set of departmental outcomes that each major emphasis can
emphasize appropriately?
+ Ifwe have different sets of outcomes for each emphasis, how will they relate to any
overarching departmental outcomes?
"How can we demonstrate the ways that our three emphases (and our minors) are part of a
whole, integrated department through our outcomes—and should we?
Department Meeting
We will end the Havening with an official department meeting, at which we can vote on any
items discussed during the day and set up an Ad Hoc APR committee, as well as discuss what
else is happening this year, including colloquia talks, any visiting authors plans, and, of course,
furloughs.
