Standard 4: Content Knowledge

Artifact: Into, Through and Beyond Lesson Plan Course: ED-291 Developing Language and Literacy The Into, Through and Beyond lesson plan that I completed in my Developing Language and Literacy course provides evidence that I have met Hawaii Teacher Standards Boards: Standard 4, Content Knowledge. For this Lesson Plan I was required to create a dynamic classroom objective, activity and assessment that addressed the connection between reading and writing. I wanted to be sure that the lesson would be meaningful and fall under my specific content of High school Spanish. I began by solidifying my objectives for this lesson; writing comprehension and introducing new vocabulary. I wanted to contextualize the lesson by asking students to reflect upon their own experience. I decided in advance that the best way to make the assignment meaningful and assessable was to have the students complete a reflective journal. I needed to make a trip to my public library to select a few books for review. Once I found a book, which met the criteria for my objective and assessment, I read through the text several times to highlight the new vocabulary. I also chose from the text, places where students could make personal connections. Once I wrote out my introduction, activity and assessment, I created an attention getter that would introduce the lesson and ask a question that would stoke the students curiosity. I have chosen this artifact for standard 4, Content knowledge because I believe it best represents my ability to, stimulate learner reflection on prior content knowledge, link new concepts to familiar concepts, and make connections to

learner experiences 4(d). I have found that the contributors listed above influence the meaning of a students learning. I made the Into, Through and Beyond Lesson Plan contextual so that students would be building on prior knowledge. I also made it reflective so that it would challenge students to look at two differing world perspectives on the same topic. I believe that making a lesson meaningful for students also makes it motivating. I want to be constantly challenging my students worldview, asking them to see the world from another persons eyes. In doing so, my goal is to help my students reflect on their own life, in a more knowledgeable way. I also want to give my students the tools to seek out information about other cultures and use it as a compass for their futures. If I can teach my students anything its the value of my subject in real world situations and how it pertains to them directly.
