(fter a few moments of concentration, you announce the e#act card they$ve chosen. As if you have read their mind% So let's reveal exactly how it's done... /ou2ll need a normal dec! of cards 'ut you need to arrange them in a special order. *agicians and *entalists refer to this as a stac!ed dec!. .ne of the easiest and most effecti%e methods of stac!ing a dec! is the &i &tebbins 'Pronounced (i)e* &i h &tebbens+ system. "n this system, each card has a %alue3 a #ac! is %alued 44, a $ueen 45 and a !ing 46. (ll the other cards ta!e their respecti%e %alue so the 7 is %alued 7, the 8 is %alued 8 and so on, with an ace %alued 4. The suits are also arranged in the order clu's, hearts, spades, diamonds. The easiest way to remem'er this is 'y the word 'chased' (with the %owels dropped out)9

:tart with any clu', then for the ne t card in the stac! add , to its value and ma!e it a heart. ;or the ne t card, add 6 again and ma!e it a spade. ;or the ne t card, add 6 again and ma!e it a diamond. Here's where it can get a bit tricky... When you2re adding 6 to 44, 45 or 46, you then need to su'tract 46 from the total to get the %alue of the ne t card. :o remem'er9

&o now you should have your dec) stac)ed and ready to o so let's move on. When displaying the dec! to your spectator, ma!e sure you fan them and let them see the faces of the cards. "on't make a point of this > #ust fan them as you say it&s a normal dec) of cards. Whate%er you do, don&t say @(s you can see, they&re in no particular orderAB :tatements li!e this should 'e implied non%er'ally. This is importantA Cater on, if the spectator tries to &reconstruct& the tric! and wor! out how it was done. "f they can remem'er you casually spreading the cards, they&ll discount any theories a'out the dec! 'eing in a special order or perhaps all the same card. Put the stac)ed dec) face down on the table and invite a spectator to cut the dec) anywhere they li)e. <et them to place the top half of the dec) face down ne#t to the bottom half. =nvite them to ta)e the top card from the bottom dec) and )eep it secret. 1ic!up up the 'ottom half of the dec!, place it on the top half and then pic! up the whole dec!. >ou now need to lance at the bottom card on the dec) and there are a couple of ways of doing this... .../ou can either put the cards 'ac! into their 'o , casually glancing at the 'ottom card as you do so. Better still, hold the dec) in front of you7 as if demonstratin to the spectator how to hold their card.

(s they concentrate, as! them to loo! into your eyes. 1retend you are loo!ing for su'tle psychological clues as to the %alue of their card. /ou can also loo! at micro-mo%ements in their facial muscles. All you need to do to name their card is wor) out the ne#t one in the se4uence... :o if the 'ottom card was the ace of hearts, then you&ll !now that their card is the four of spades. Rather than #ust simply naming their card, increase the drama and effect of mind-reading 'y re%ealing it 'it 'y 'it. The color first, then whether it is a low, high or picture card. Then name the card in full. To really play with the system, you can su'tly suggest that you are a'out to read the wrong card. ;or instance, if the spectator&s card is the nine of clu's, you might re%eal it in the following way9 @17 its a blac) card7 yesA Coo! for %isual confirmation. ='m ettin an 'i' ... 'i' ... five ... a fiveA ?o7 sounds li)e five 6 its a nine7 yesA !efinitely not a spade so it must be the nine of clubs% (nother method of re%ealing the chosen card is to draw it on a notepad. Deep your drawing hidden, then in%ite the spectator to turn around their card and announce the design. /ou can then flip o%er your notepad, re%ealing the same design.
