There is a high cost of maintenance associated with conventional three blade turbines. As well, with multiple moving parts, oil-based lubricants are required, causing potential fire hazard (refer to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5KvJjI21i0 for video of wind turbine nacelle on fire) 8

External Axis Wind Turbine (EAWT) System

exoPOWER Turbines

5 kW/h to 10kW/h exoPOWER Prototype.

Wind blades, or SAILS, are positioned along the circumference of a ring frame. Multiple bearings and supports share the stress and torque of the turbine equally. The external ring frame is mounted on an outer rail/track that is laid on the horizontal. Blades (or SAILS) of the exoPOWER takes advantage of the wind flow by sitting in and being propelled by wind energy much like that of the sail on a sailboat, significantly increasing its energy generating efficiency. Central hub (nacelle) is eliminated 11 in the EAWT design.

Power Generation from exoPOWER

WER exoP

Magnets are mounted along the circumference of the turbine. As the turbine rotates, the magnets pass continuously along the mounted coil packs. Power off takes feed the converter, changing alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). The inverter then directs the power to the circuit breaker which flows back to the grid or to a battery storage system for on-demand electricity. Energy from exoPOWER turbines can be taken off by a number of different methods, including but not limited to coil and magnet, hydraulic and mechanical systems.

13

exoPOWER turbine coupled with exoHOUSING (Parts A and B)

WER

The exoHOUSING has the capability of controlling and redirecting the wind to enhance airflow. This results in improved energy generation efficiency. As well, the exoHOUSING protects birds and prevents other projectile objects from damaging the blades/sails. The exoPOWER System is designed to be scalable at the machine level and can stack upon each other. The exoHOUSING can also be designed to fit into the landscape.

Improving Windload and Creating Commercial Space

exoTOWER

WER exoP

exoTOWER can be used to raise the height of the exoTURBINE (typically, elevation windload) Within exoTOWER, energy storage facilities (i.e., industrial sized batteries) can be installed. On external walls of exoTOWER, solar panels can be installed. Commercial /industrial space can be created inside the exoTOWER.

exoPOWER Turbine Oilfields Application

WER

Power from the grid, or delivered through diesel or propane powered generators is a major expense for many O&G producers. exoPOWER turbines provides an efficient means of generating and delivering power at point of source where it is required. Off grid and/or net metering exoPOWER turbines holds the promise of reducing cost and potentially provide additional revenues for O&G producers.
23

exoP

Wind Turbines and Solar Panels are already being used to produce and deliver electricity to where it is needed in the oil fields

Features
Mono-Rail supported turbine with multiple stands around the circumference. The turbine wheel is the only major moving component of the exoPOWER.
Scalable and stackable up to 6 exoPOWER turbines or more per site.

Benefits
Removes the load and stress generated from the traditional center bearings to the circumference of the turbine. Gearbox, yaw motors, and pitch control systems are eliminated no need for oil-based lubricants and fluids, and maintenance is reduced. There are no complicated castings or components used or required. Provides versatility and adaptability to project size and sites. Allows for higher order of power production/delivery from single site.
Modular design so if one section fails, exoPOWER may continue to operate while the rest of coil packs and invertors divert and add capacity output to compensate. As well, heat that is generated is able to dissipate around the circumference of the turbine. There is no requirement for added liquid cooling as well.

WER

Magnet and Coil Pack Generation

Ease of Transportation to Site Locations. Housing allows options for storage of energy and other means of energy generation.

exoP

Standardized cargo containers can be used to ship to a location anywhere in the world.
Application dependent, outside surface area of exoHOUSING provides allowances for mounting of Solar Panels. Available space inside the housing and/or exoTOWER is ideal for Hydrogen Generation (HOGEN cell) energy storage system or off-the-shelf batteries or fuel cells for any excess energy that is produced.

Ease of assembly on site.

By design, exoPOWER turbines do not require a period of calm winds to complete construction and setup. As the housing encloses the turbine, it will not be subject to wind loading during assembly process, allowing for a faster return on investment for the customer.

By design, housing protects wildlife and moderates noise.

Housing provides the ability to reduce or stop birds, bats, and other species from contacting any large moving assemblies. Noise generated from wing tip speed is moderated as the blades are always moving in concert with 26 each other.
