Reflection: The Artifact that I chose to represent Teaching Standard Seven: Assessment is my reflection paper on the experience I had

conducting a screening on a student in my class. I will refer to the experience and how they relate to the standard as well. This artifact demonstrates the characteristics defined in Knowledge Indicator C, and Performance Indicator F. I chose this screening assignment to represent this standard because it demonstrates a process how I used appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes. I made decisions driven by the data I collected using the screening process. This artifact is representative of Knowledge Indicator C because I had to understand measurement theory and assessment-related issues while performing the screening, and while assessing the results. After reviewing the screening, Quentin scored a 28 on the Early Screening Inventory, which means that he is Ok. I learned from doing this screening, that in order for Quentin to succeed, he needs to be fully focused on the activity at hand. An assessment-related issue that I took note of during my review was Quentins lack of focus during certain aspects of the screening. For example, he succeeded, even thrived, during the first three questions of the verbal reasoning section. He very easily was able to come up with the ending to the sentences, however once the first three were completed, his interest level was lost and he was focused on something else in the room. When I asked him the last question in the chain, A bird flies; a fish__ he wasnt even listening to the sentence as a whole, and responded, and it fliesinto the airbirds fly. The most concerning issue, in my opinion, is not the questions he got wrong, but why he got them wrong. I had to be concerned with this to make sure I addressed the validity, reliability, and bias of the screening in order to ensure appropriate and accurate scoring. The artifact is also representative of Performance Indicators F. While running the Early Screening Inventory, I had to effectively use appropriate technologies to conduct assessments, monitor performance, and assess student progress. There were many steps and procedure that I had to follow to properly perform the screening. I was provided with a scoring sheet, a manual, which I used to guide me through the scoring process, and a bag of materials to conduct the activities with. These activities were done in a specific order with clearly written instructions I was to follow. One activity, for example, was that I had to draw something, and then Quentin to the best of his ability, on a separate sheet copied what I drew. My directions were to monitor his performance, and then using the Manual, assess his work. There were examples of what each score should look like. This specific screening process offered methods to observe progress, by allowing for second chances. There were areas where if the student answered one question wrong, there was another question to ask afterwards. Running this Screening, and then writing my assessment on it, demonstrates the strides Ive made as a teacher. I am developing important skills necessary for understanding how to properly evaluate and assess a student using a formulaic process. Most schools have a specific screening tool which they have implement for their own school, however it is very important for a novice teacher to be familiar and comfortable with such tools. I am learning how to not only assess the child but also assess the tool, which is extremely important for providing the most accurate and unbiased results.
