Introduction/Set Induction (5 minutes):

This YouTube clip introduces how interior designers create sample boards, a project we are going to start today in class. Sherry Tyra gives ideas on how to mount samples and techniques for gluing them onto the foam core board. Video Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKRFLPGXneM

Transition (5 minutes):
Ask the question Does anyone know how interior designers write? Have students raise their hand if they think they know the answer. If they dont know the answer tell them that you will show them, and that they will be expected to write like a professional interior designer on all of their assignments.

Points to be made

Were going to start by giving ourselves some straight lines to work with. Everything on our sample boards is going to be clean and crisp, and our writing is going to be the same.

2- Create vertical lines over the horizontal lines Creating a grid while hand lettering gives us guidance while laying out our letters.

3- Write a few letters in the grid you created.

When lettering our letters are ALWAYS capital letters! An important thing to remember while hand lettering is that our letters should seem animated while still being orderly, legible, and neat.

4- Finish each of the letters in the alphabet

A G M S Y

B H N T Z

C I O U

D J P V

E K Q W

F L R X

Sometimes when lettering it might be useful to use a ruler for your vertical lines, that way the will be perpendicular to your vertical line.

5- Hand lettering doesnt come naturally for everyone, like me for instance, I typically write in lowercase letters and connect many of my letters as if I were writing in cursive. Just like playing the piano, lettering takes practice.

Transition (5 minutes):
Pass out the Lettering Practice worksheet to each student. Read the directions: Write each of the following quotes as many times as you can in the lined space provided for you. Instruct students that this assignment is only for practice but that each of the quotes must be written at least twice to receive full participation points.

Quiet Work (20 minutes):

Allow students 20 (twenty) minutes to work on their lettering worksheet. Circulate around the classroom to make sure the students are on task. Complement student when you feel a student is working diligently and showing that they are beginning to master the concept.

Transition (5 minutes):
After the 20 (twenty) minutes have students turn their worksheets in if they are complete. Students should be told that for each and every assignment that is how they should write. This includes their name on their assignments. For this assignment it isnt necessary for them to have written their name using architectural writing. For those students that have not yet finished their worksheet they will have time later during the class period to finish them.

Demonstration (10 minutes):

Before beginning the demonstration hand out the Presentation Methods handout. Have students go around the room reading each of the bullet points under Lettering Rules. Let students know that this handout is for them to keep so they can refer back to it at a later time. Demonstration Main Body: Outline of Steps in Demonstration: 1- Refer to the picture at the bottom of the Presentation Methods handout. This is an example of how your samples should be mounted. Samples that should be mounted on white cardstock are typically pictures, and sometimes paint swatches.

2- Find a picture in a magazine and cut it out for the students to see. Emphasize the importance of having each corner be 90 degrees. If necessary use a rules to draw cutting lines around the picture so it looks professional and will be easy to mount.

3- Using a glue stick coat the back of the picture you cut out in glue. Place it on a sheet of white cardstock far enough from the edge of the paper to create a boarder that can be equal all around the picture.

5- Cut around the picture leaving a boarder of equidistance on all sides.

6- Label the picture in professional architectural lettering.

Transition/ Directions (5 minutes):

Now that you have seen how to mount pictures professionally, I want you to take the rest of the class period to look through magazines to find images that you like that you would want in your future home. Cut out those images and mount them just like Ive shown you. Well be using the images you find later this week when we create our Dream House concept boards. If students didnt finish their lettering worksheet they need to finish that before they being to look through magazines.

Quiet Work (20 minutes)

Students have 20 (twenty) minutes to look through magazines and find images that they want to cut out, mount, and label for their Dream House concept boards that they will be working on later in the week. While students are working it is fine if they talk quietly one with another but keep the noise level low. Walk around the classroom a couple times just to make sure students are on task.

Summary/Closure (5 minutes):
With 5 (five) minutes left of class ask students to clean up their messes and to put the magazines back where they found them. Remind students to save their images for their Dream House concept boards that they will be making. Students may want to collect more images while they are at home to bring back for next time. Each student should have turned in their lettering worksheet before they leave class if they want to receive participation points for the day

Assessment/Evaluation:
Students will receive participation points based on their completion of the lettering worksheet. Students were required to write each of the quotes at least twice. Adaption for diverse learners: some students might be required to write each of the quotes one time to receive full participation points.
