Title of Lesson: Map Skills, Directions Grade Level(s): First

VA SOL: 1.4 The student will develop map skills by b) using cardinal directions on maps Content Objective(s): The students will be able to identify the cardinal directions on a compass rose as well as identify objects in different places by listening to directions. Accommodations/ Differentiation Assessment (based on objectives): The students will be able to identify to listen to cardinal directions read aloud by the teacher and move their bodies in the correct directions and the students will be able to listen to directions and move their fingers on the bingo board to the correct object. Finally, the students will be able to color objects on a map by listening to directions given by the teacher. Materials: Whiteboard and marker Directions Bingo worksheet (attached) Plymouth Map worksheet (attached) Integration of technology: N/A

Accommodations/ Differentiation Anticipatory Set (Hook & Agenda): Today we are going to work on listening to the cardinal directions in order to identify objects on a map.

Time Planned 1 min.

Access/Review Prior Knowledge: (Draw compass rose on the whiteboard) Who can raise their hand and tell me what I have drawn on the board? Now lets see if we can remember the directions on the compass rose. (Point to each spot on the compass rose and have class say out loud each direction.)

Teaching Process & Modeling (Content is presented, accessed, or built): Guided Practice & Checking for Understanding: Independent Practice: 1. The teacher will ask the students to stand up at their seats. 2. The teacher will say allowed directions such as move 1 step north and 1 step east and the students will follow the directions by moving their bodies. The teacher will continue this about 3-5 times to make sure all students are following directions properly and moving in the correct directions. 3. The students will then sit down and we will play direction bingo. 4. The teacher will tell the students what spot on the bingo chart to place their finger, such as the pencil. The teacher will then give directions such as when the students were standing. 5. At the end of the set of directions the teacher will have the class say out loud where their finger ended up listening to make sure all students are following directions. 6. The students will then get the Plymouth map worksheet. 7. The teacher will give directions on what colors to color each object on the map. 8. The teacher will check for understanding by having the students turn in their worksheets and see that they colored the objects at each direction the proper color. 9. If time at the end, the teacher will call students up to the front of the room and have them give directions for direction bingo. 10. The teacher will call on as many students at the end as there is time for before we go to music. 29 min.

Closure: Now everyone turn in their worksheet to the work finished bin. If you are not finished leave it on your desk. It is now time to line up for music.
