Topic of Lesson:
Introduction to Native American Regions
Objective of Lesson:
Students will be able to divide the United States into three regions inhabited by the Native Americans: Eastern Woodlands (Powhatan), Great Plains (Lakota), and Southwest (Pueblo).
VA SOL:
Primary: Social Studies 2.4 c-dThe student will develop map skills by c) locating the regions of the Powhatan, Lakota, and Pueblo Indians on United States maps; d) understanding the relationship between the environment and the culture of the Powhatan, Lakota, and Pueblo Indians. Related: Social Studies SOL 2.2The student will compare the lives and contributions of three American Indian cultures of the past and present, with emphasis on the Powhatan of the Eastern Woodlands, the Lakota of the Plains, and the Pueblo peoples of the Southwest. Social Studies 2.6The student will demonstrate map skills by constructing simple maps, using title, map legend, and compass rose. Writing 2.22.12 The student will write stories, letters, and simple explanations.
Materials:
SMARTboard United States map Post-its Poster Regions handout

How were the regions of the Native Americans divided? What was the culture of the Native Americans like?

Motivation/Introduction:
Discuss students prior knowledge of Christopher Columbus. o What did he come to America to find? What did he find instead? o Was there anyone living here already? Have students skim over textbook pages 36-37. Make a K-W-L chart for the Native Americans using SOL Essential Knowledge categories as headers (tribes, homes, jobs, transportation, etc.).
Participation/Supervised Practice:
Students consider Native American relationship to nature while matching animals with pictures of their tracks. Facilitate SMARTboard activity for students to match regions with the Native American tribes who lived there. Differentiation: Learning Modality- Visual/ Kinesthetic
Independent Practice:
Students create maps that show the regions that the Native American tribes inhabited. o Discuss students prior knowledge of how to make a key for their map.
Closure/Evaluation:
Group One: The Native Americans respected and relied on their environment. Make a list of some ways you rely on nature. Group Two: Write 3 sentences about the culture of the Native Americans. Illustrate it at the bottom.
