Manhattan College Education Department Name Marina Culhane Strengths Marina's mathematics lesson on equal groups for her second graders was comprehensively planned, extensively prepared, and well delivered. Marina successfully engaged her students, and addressed their multiple learning styles, as she used a variety of stimulating materials (Hula hoops, egg carton, water bottles, Each Orange had 8 slices: A Counting Book, colorful problem solving handouts, individual white boards) to lead an exploration of equal groups, repeated addition, skip counting and arrays. Essential questions were posed; key terms reviewed; effective modeling accomplished, and technology (smartboard, document reader) well used. Marina circulated, monitored and facilitated the students' efforts, and designed and incorporated a detailed checklist assessment rubric to evaluate student learning. A final summary closure/share was conducted. Throughout, Marina exhibited excellent rapport with her students and cooperating teacher; used praise well, and her self-reflection was well-written and thoughtfuL Date 11/13/13

Areas needing improvements/suggestions In our post observation conference we discussed: You should have elicited why the 2 boys in separate hoops weren't a group of two. You paced the lesson very well, but don't be afraid of allowing some additional time for students to more fully process the material. Promote critical thinking by regularly asking, "Did anyone solve the problem a different way?" (e.g. as when Thomas offered his solution). Kudos for a thoroughly engaging, enjoyable lesson.
