PHOTOSYNTHESIS SUMATATIVE PROJECT

Claire Champommier November 13, 2013 Science 1

PROBLEM: How does doubling the amount of carbon dioxide from .5g of bisodium carbonate dissolved in 100mL of water to 1g dissolved in 100mL of water affect the rate of photosynthesis in elodea? HYPOTHESIS: If the amount of baking soda is increased by half (0.5g) in 100mL of water, then the rate of photosynthesis will increase by 50%. THOERY: Photosynthesis is when the pigments of chlorophyll in the chloroplasts of plant cells in the leaves capture sunlight, and convert it into energy they can use to carry out cell functions. The reactants for photosynthesis are CO2, H2O, and light, and the products are glucose and O2. I think the rate of photosynthesis will increase when we add 0.5 more grams of baking soda to the 100mL of water because one of the main reactants of photosynthesis to be able to occur is CO2. We can use the information in the data table below to support this because between 6 classes there was an average of a 45% increase in the rate of photosynthesis when they added 0.5g of baking soda to the 100mL of water. 2012 AVERAGE DATA IN 3 MINUTES FROM 5 DIFFERENT CLASSES Baking Soda in 100mL water

PROCEDURE FOR CARBON DIOXIDE (BAKING SODA) 1. Measure and cut at an angle elodea 7 to 9 cm. 2. Remove a few leaves from end of stem and slightly crush end of stem. 3. Measure mass in grams and record. 1.3g 4. Put elodea stem side up in a test tube. 5. Fill test tube with water and baking soda solution (1 gram to 100 mL of water). 6. Put tube in rack and adjust lamp with light 5 cm from top of test tube. 7. Turn on lamp and wait 1 minute.

8. After 1 minute, begin counting small, medium and large bubbles for 3 minutes. Record data. 9. Repeat with 0.5 grams and 100mL of water. 10. Repeat for Trial 2 DATA/OBSERVATIONS:

Conclusion In this lab we experimented how doubling the amount of carbon dioxide from 0.5 grams of bisodium carbonate dissolved in 100mL of water to 1 gram dissolved in 100mL of water affects the rate of photosynthesis in elodea. I hypothesized that if the amount of baking soda is increased by half (.5g) in 100mL of water, then the rate of photosynthesis will increase by 50%. In 1 the rate of photosynthesis for 1 gram of baking soda increased 1.7% more than the whole 7th grade average for 1 gram of baking soda. Still when 0.5 grams of baking soda were added to the first 0.5 grams the rate of photosynthesis in the elodea increased (1 increased by 22.3%, and the whole 7th grade average increased by 27%). This shows that my hypothesis was correct in the way that the rate of photosynthesis increased. However my hypothesis is wrong because I hypothesized that the rate of photosynthesis would increase by 50%, but the rate of photosynthesis increased only by 22.3%.

Analysis Even though there was an increase of CO2 when 0.5 grams of baking soda was added to another 0.5 grams, 3 periods out of the 6 had a decrease in the rate of photosynthesis. This shows that 50% of the periods had a decrease in CO2 production when 0.5 grams of baking soda was added. 7 had 3.8 bubbles for 0.5 grams of baking soda, and 72.8 bubbles for 1.0 grams of baking soda. The results for this lab were inconsistent depending on how long the group stirred the baking soda. When pouring the baking soda and water mixture into the test tube some of the baking soda might have stuck to the sides of the beaker. Next time to make the procedure more reliable the baking soda should be added in the test tube with no water or elodea. Then put in the Elodea, and then the water.
